A quick sub package 🧵. #RevPit Query letter (sell & showcase your craft): ✔ Hookiest part first (one sentence) ✔ Brief character intro (who, where, & when) ✔ Main conflict (what) ✔ Stakes (why—don't keep your secrets) ✔ Pitch (comps, metadata) ✔ Bio (do you like cats?)

We're going to write a sample query letter together, right now. Let's say this is a middle-grade novel about a fox who falls in love with a fire monster (I'm just making stuff up, forgive me). Sound good? Let's dig in... 🧵 #RevPit

Synopsis tip for #AmQuerying writers - When introducing your character for the 1st time in a synopsis (not talking about the query letter) put their name in ALL CAPS. This is super helpful when reading. #QueryTip #WritingCommunity

We think we have QueryManager fixed. Thank you for your patience. Some may see it back in just a few hours, for others it could take up to 24 hours for the changes to take effect. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Okay so I was also taught that your ms title should be all caps in a query letter and comp titles should be italics. But, some disk horse made me curious. So I've been researching. Here's what I've found 🧵

Writing a synopsis is hard. But I’m not looking for voice or perfection in one though. I just need to get an idea of the main story and character arc, and I expect spoilers. It doesn’t have to be complicated. And it doesn’t “ruin” anything for me in the read.

#RevPit #10Queries CT 2 YA F QL Hook starts off strong, but then rest of blurb focuses too much on the magic system and the history of the world. The story’s main conflict is lost within all the extra detail. Keep the focus on the characters, their motives, and the stakes.

Takeaways: 🌟This batch was stronger than ever! 🌟Use italics for comps and all caps for your novel in a query 🌟Hook, book, cook is a helpful query formula 🌟Can be helpful to have metadata at start of query letter but not necessary (I find it helpful) #RevPit #10Queries

Q8: MG HF. Comps mis-formatted but used well. Overall, missing a strong sense of stakes. What happens if the MC can’t accomplish their goal? And what happens if they do? This is where stakes are, and the space between these two things is where the tension is. #RevPit #10Queries

Q6: A SF. Remember to italicize comp titles and ALL CAPS your title. Query is running long. Aim for 250-300 words, including author bio. There’s room for more stakes in this query. You don’t want to give outcomes; you want to show tension. #RevPit #10Queries

Q2: A FR. Great usage of comps by drawing out specific elements from other titles. The [specific element] of Title A meets the [specific element] of Title B is a great formula. Too many details in the metadata tho which are already implied by the summary #RevPit #10Queries

Q1: YA D. Query gets a bit too detailed with world building and as a result, stakes are unclear. You don’t usually need to name specific world elements. Keep world building very general in query to focus on stakes instead. #RevPit #10Queries

Good Q. Two-three paragraphs of plot summary should be maintained wherever possible. You can't get into who the MC is, what pushes them out of their normal, and add stakes/this is how they fix it into one paragraph. Hook, plot summary, meta, bio #RevPit #10Queries
Replying to @Maria_Tureaud
I have a question regarding querying now: There are a lot of suggestions that the Q should be hook + one tight paragraph for the book. Then meta & bio. Do you think the one paragraph is the way to go, vs two in the days of old? Are you seeing that more often in queries now? Thx!

P4: We open with a prologue. It’s beautifully written, but I have none of the who/where/what/how/when that I need to connect to the MC. Suggestion for querying: omit prologues when submitting, and add them back in when material is requested. #RevPit #10queries
