This clip of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is getting a lot of attention tonight, but many of the people sharing it are misstating what she was asked. When she said, "Not to my knowledge," she was not answering whether she had married her brother. Chris Hayes had already asked about the brother claim, and she called it ā€œinsaneā€ and a right-wing conspiracy theory initially started by a Somali blog. "Not to my knowledge" was her answer to his follow-up, whether she was related to the man in any way. People are welcome to criticize her for that — but they should at least get the question she was asked right.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Thank you to everyone who stood with me over the years. It’s been a scary journey but I have always been grounded in my work and ability to provide exemplary service to my constituents. Trump and his administration have been after me since I arrived in Congress. I have always stood up to him and that will never change. The pedophile protector will never silence me.
BREAKING WaPo: Trump officials scrutinized Rep. Ilhan Omar in 2019. They didn't find citizenship issues.
The earlier review of Omar's immigration records looked at many of the same issues being investigated now. washingtonpost.com/national-…

We Stand With @IlhanMN 🩵 For a decade, Trump has targeted @Ilhan with vile rhetoric. This morning, federal agents raided Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's home. No president should ever be able to weaponize the federal government against his political enemies. #IStandWithIlhan

The President just told Minnesotans to "fight back" against Somalis. By name. Every Somali I know is walking through our own neighborhoods scared tonight. This is incitement, and everyone should call it that.
Trump is trying to start a race war in Minnesota: "The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants. There is Violence, Murder, and Mayhem all over the State. The people of Minnesota must fight back. You have been robbed, and abandoned by your State Government. Your Governor is an incompetent thief who doesn't want to get involved. He just wants to get out of town with as much as he can steal, and then, lead a quiet life. The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing. They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back! If you need, the Federal Government will come to your rescue. Governor Tim Walz, and Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, must immediately ask for Federal help — and leave the rest to us! President DONALD J. TRUMP"

Like so many women, I’ve experienced a miscarriage. Years ago, when my doctor couldn’t find a heartbeat, I was given medication to help me through it. I was grateful to have access to the care I needed during an incredibly difficult time. That’s why protecting access to mifepristone and medication abortion matters. These medications are an essential part of medical care, including during miscarriage. No woman should have to navigate an experience like this without the care and choices she needs.

The only poll that matters is the one on 11/3. Minnesotans know we cannot afford an AG who would be a rubber stamp for Trump and a doormat for the corporations squeezing us every day. Early voting begins this Friday, lock in: mobilize.us/keithellison/

Weird that we’re all just ignoring Minnesota — where Bernie-backed Peggy Flanagan beat the establishment candidate by 20 points with record turnout, despite $20 million in spending against her — because it doesn’t fit the establishment narrative.

Minnesota, you're up. On Tuesday, August 11th, @peggyflanagan will face Rep. Angie Craig in the state's Democratic Senate primary. Angie gets an F on the Integrity Index and has accepted nearly $1,000,000 in corporation contributions over the past two cycles. Her candidacy has been buoyed by a collection of dark money Super PACs backed by billionaire financier Stephen Mandel. It's The Many vs. The Money, Minnesota. Vote accordingly.

Peggy Flanagan is being greatly outspent by billionaire-funded super PACs who are spending a record-breaking $20 million against her. They have the money. We have the people. Let's elect @peggyflanagan on Tuesday.
