Nine students walked into a public library in Jackson, Mississippi in 1961 and asked for books.
The library was for white people. Their own library did not have what they needed.
They sat down and read. They were arrested for breach of the peace. For reading.
27th March 1961. The Tougaloo Nine — Meredith Anding, James Bradford, Alfred Cook, Geraldine Edwards, Janice Jackson, Joseph Jackson, Albert Lassiter, Evelyn Pierce and Ethel Sawyer — students at Tougaloo College.
They went first to the Black branch library and requested books that were not held there. Then they walked to the main public library on State Street and requested the same books.
They were told to leave and go to the Black branch. They sat down at the tables and started reading.
The police came. Breach of the peace. They spent about thirty-two hours in jail and were fined a hundred dollars each.
The next day students at Jackson State held a prayer vigil for them and police broke it up with dogs and clubs.
This is called the Jackson Read-In, and it is the first direct action of the Mississippi movement — before the Freedom Rides reached the state, before Medgar Evers's murder, before Freedom Summer. Nine students decided the opening move of the Mississippi civil rights movement would be requesting a book.
The choice of target was not sentimental. A library is the purest possible demonstration. Nobody can argue that a library is about private property, or cleanliness, or protecting white women. It is a building full of public knowledge, paid for by everybody's taxes, that Black citizens were not allowed to enter.
All nine finished their degrees. Several became teachers and professors. In 2011 Mississippi honoured them, fifty years on, in the state that had jailed them.
The Jackson library is desegregated. One of the branches is named after Medgar Evers.

Yes, God’s been good to you. He’s provided. He’s protected. He’s made ways. You could be satisfied, but you haven’t seen anything yet. God loves you too much to let you miss the fullness of what He has in store.

Greatness isn’t built by wishful thinking. It is crafted by what we do every day. It’s not so much the outcomes that decide your future, but the habits you live out when nobody’s watching.
Stack up good choices, day after day, and the wins will follow. Own your habits, and greatness will find you.

Worrying about the situation is not going to make it better. Worrying is working. Living offended is working. Being discouraged, thinking about how impossible it looks—that’s working. Take the pressure off. You’re trying to do everything in your own strength. God wants you to depend on Him.

Mike Epps bought the entire hood he grew up in, including his grandmother’s roughly 120-year-old home, renovated every house, and then made them affordable for the people living there 🏘💯

God didn’t change His mind about your purpose. He didn’t disqualify you because you made a mistake. He hasn’t forgotten about you out in the desert. You may have been there a long time, but this is a new day.

Sometimes we’ve done all we can. We’ve prayed. We’ve stayed in faith. We worked hard, but nothing changed. It’s tempting to feel discouraged. “There’s nothing more I can do.” That’s when the Most High is going to step in and do what you couldn’t do. He’s the chain breaker. He came to loose the chains, to break the bondages.

Don’t sit down and nurse your wounds. Go out and be good to someone. Your pain can become a platform. God wants to make you an example. Despite the wound, you're still serving, still giving, still dreaming, still being a blessing.
