In April 2025, Shedeur Sanders sat in a room with cameras on him and waited to hear his name. He waited for two days. He had been talked about as a possible number one pick. Instead he went 144th overall, in the fifth round, to Cleveland. Cam Ward went first that year and signed for $48.8 million. Sanders signed for $4.6 million. The slide cost him roughly $44 million, and it happened in front of everybody, in real time, for two straight days. He is the Browns backup quarterback now. On Tuesday he drove to East Cleveland. He went to Kirk Middle School and Caledonia Elementary with 500 backpacks full of school supplies, plus pizza and ice cream, because September is Attendance Awareness Month and the whole point was to get kids to keep coming to school. Here is why that district in particular matters. East Cleveland City Schools spent more than seven years under an Academic Distress Commission. That is the state of Ohio taking control of your schools because the test scores say you have failed. Seven years of being told, publicly and officially, that you are not good enough. They got out on December 24, 2025. Released from state oversight. They had hit 16 of 20 academic benchmarks over three years and moved from two stars to three on the state report card. The superintendent called it a community effort. That was nine months before Shedeur Sanders showed up with the backpacks. He was asked why he picked those two schools. "I chose two schools in East Cleveland because I like going to different places a lot of people wouldn't go and showing the positive side to things." And then he explained the timing, which is the part that tells you he actually thought about it. "The school year started, but maybe they needed a little bit more motivation to keep having great attendance and keep going." He did not show up in August when everybody shows up. He showed up in week five, when it gets hard and kids start missing days. He signed things. He talked to them. He handed out the food himself. The NFL Players Association named him the Week 3 Community MVP for it and donated $10,000 to his Legendary Impact Foundation. Being named Community MVP also puts him in the running for the Alan Page Community Award, which comes with another $100,000. The Browns posted about it. So did a lot of people. But think about who was standing in that gym. A quarterback who spent two days on national television being passed over by every team in the league, in a school district that spent seven years being publicly labeled a failure and just climbed out of it. He did not mention any of that. He just told them to keep showing up.
