This morning I have spent 30 minutes deciding on the placement of a comma. Best job ever.

"I was born in a family of refugees, and my parents could barely read or write. My father finished sixth grade and my mother couldn’t read or write. It’s quite a journey. Science allows you to do it. Science is the greatest equalising force in the world."
This year’s chemistry laureate Omar Yaghi was born in Amman, Jordan, in 1965 to parents who were refugees from Palestine. When we spoke to him he shared his story: “I grew up in a very humble home, we were a dozen of us in one room, sharing it with the cattle that we used to raise. I was born in a family of refugees, and my parents could barely read or write. My father finished sixth grade and my mother couldn’t read or write. It’s quite a journey. Science allows you to do it. Science is the greatest equalising force in the world. Smart people, talented people, skilled people exist everywhere. That’s why we really should focus on unleashing their potential through providing them with opportunity.” Today Yaghi shared the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Susumu Kitagawa and Richard Robson for their work developing metal–organic frameworks. I did this once! A nice person at the American Airlines desk rebooked me at no cost onto a different flight (from the airport I'd mistakenly arrived at). Normalise arriving at the wrong airport!
Heading to catch a flight? Make sure you’re going to the right airport. Seriously. Customer service managers at Dulles and National said travelers confuse the D.C.-area airports on an almost daily basis. wapo.st/3KyU8h7

I'm at the Lepton-Photon conference in Madison, WI, this week. Among a great group of physicists there are three textbook legends: Michael Peskin, Francis Halzen, and Mark Thomson. I should have brought my book copies to get them autographed 📕😎

The actual story is *much* less exciting than the headline bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gm…

Well, this is neat - fully-reconstructed B* -> Bγ decays, and order-of-magnitude improvement on their masses. Chapeau CMS! arxiv.org/abs/2508.05820

Here's one of the key findings. The right plot shows time resolution for a new device fabricated by Micron Semiconductor.

I had a great time yesterday evening at the @PhysAstroEd 3 Minute Thesis competition. Six PhD students from the School and four judges from across the research spectrum. We were at the historic Anatomy LT (formerly home of Burke and Hare antics). Also, elephants!

I passed by my old @UoMparticle office at CERN today. I think the door sign needs a refresh! How many of those people are still in the group? I count 6/29. In fairness a lot has happened since late 2019...
