The 31st Queer Screen - Mardi Gras Film Festival will be screening in cinemas from 15 - 29 February 2024, #TaiwanFilmFest is honoured to co-present director Su I-Hsuan’s directorial debut feature WHO’LL STOP THE RAIN; nominated for Best Cinematography and Best New Performer at the 60th #GoldenHorse Awards, as well as selected for 2023 @tiff_site and 2024 International Film Festival Rotterdam - @IFFR . The story unfolds with Chi-Wei, a freshman at the university, grappling with repression against her freedom of expression. In her quest for justice, she crosses paths with a student group sharing the same goal. Yet, the struggle takes a complex turn as a triangle relationship emerges within the group. Inspired by an actual event in the 1990s at the University in Taipei, where a group of students initiated a strike to protest for creative freedom. The 10th Queer Screen Film Festival will kick off this week, from 23-27 August in Sydney. One film you won't want to miss is PEAFOWL (2022), the debut feature by South Korean writer-director Byun Sung-bin, following his successful short film GOD’S DAUGHTER DANCE (2020). Starring dancer Choi Hae-jun (also the lead from GOD’S DAUGHTER DANCE) who won Outstanding Performance in an International Narrative Feature at L.A. Outfest this year, in the role of a trans woman who competes in waacking, a form of voguing. “Sloane Kim Hae-in’s vibrant 4:3 cinematography (imaginative compositions and sensual close-ups abound), Jung Boo-ja’s costuming and the electronica-oriented score by Casepeat all pull their weight (and more) in a picture which achieves an organic harmony of constituent parts under Byun’s assured control” said Neil Young, SCREEN DAILY.
