📢 NEW POST!
Our first of 2023 is #KathyMacDonald, a brilliant Palaeolithic archaeologist who tragically passed away last year. She worked on 'Big Picture' questions eg how hominins settled vast & challenging landscapes, with or without fire 🔥

Of all the lies we tell ourselves, the most comforting and damaging is the lie of an afterlife. There is no means by which our minds, that emerge from the interaction of several complex systems (brain, body, physical world, social world), could persist after death.🧵

Sapiens may not have been the first, or even second (if we assume Neanderthal used it) to make fire. @Pyropithecus, what do you make of this? Pity really that Berger didn’t first publish his finds. washingtonpost.com/science/2…

Fire, light & smoke! Our new experiments show harmful pm2.5 levels in smoke vary massively (5000 ug/g - 120,000 ug/g) between different type of fuel used in Palaeolithic combustion features (animal dung/fresh bone/grass/reeds/woods). WHO recommend 25 ug/g for 24hour period!🤢😱☠️
