Your same old @liberal_party achieved the 2% spending requirement on paper using accounting tricks that did absolutely nothing to make the CAF larger, more lethal, more deployable or more effective. Example A, you transferred the Coast Guard’s budget to DND but didn’t integrate their command structure, meaning an additional $800+ million gets added to defence spending, but the Coast Guard isn’t actually under the control of the national defence department. Example B, you are renovating barracks & married quarters across the country which includes millions in landscaping. Those millions are now being counted towards the 2% requirement. Is good landscaping now an effective motivator to kill bad guys? Example C, for the first time, you applied the entire capital costs of weapons & ammunition purchases that will be delivered over multiple years, in a single year. Example D, you applied the entire capital cost associated with building new infrastructure to support future weapons (specifically the hundreds of millions being spent on new secure high tech hangers for the F35’s & the initial construction for the OTHR system) in a single year instead of amortizing the costs over the 3-5 year building cycle that is currently forecast. Achieving a goal for the sake of some short term political bragging is so typical of the new & old Liberal Party! It’s pitiful, you know it, CDN’s know it, NATO knows it but they couldn’t care less because if push comes to shove, the serious NATO countries already know Canada has little to offer by way of a military response.
