Get obsessed with comps. It pays off. If you can afford it even for a month, pay for Publishers Marketplace. Go to Deals > Latest Deals, and search keywords relevant to your book. "Books" is another tab to explore.
So much info to dig into.

This has been one of the best tools for researching comps and understanding the market.
It also helped me get more targeted when it came to other professionals I wanted to connect with (agents/editors).

I make my query list from all the things you mention and almost always the last was Publishers Marketplace for deals, rank, and numbers, then I found this super helpful piece, the agent matcher. A few parameters and voila a list, a great starting point.

I’ll have more information in the new year, but I wanted to let people know I’m launching a new book review publication and literary magazine with Sam Kahn and Lou Bahet called The Metropolitan Review. Too few books get reviewed in America and we hope to change that. More TK!

May you write consistently, write with hope, write with the belief you will one day see a Publisher’s Marketplace announcement with your name on it, one day find your book on the best shelf at your favorite bookstore.
An evergreen message: People who invest time and money to attend trade shows are "optimistic" and "upbeat". When they aren't, it's game over.
