Chanuka at the courthouse! Stop by my office for some gelt (chocolate money), spin a dreidel, and enjoy some much-needed light from the Chanukiya. Chag Urim Sameach to all who are celebrating.
Today, on Tish’a Be’av - the Jewish day of national mourning - the millennia-long cycle of Jewish tragedy is laid out before us. Last night we read the anguished words of Jeremiah from megillat Eicha as he watched the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.
This afternoon I will watch October 8 - a film that chronicles the continuing explosion of antisemitism, particularly on North American campuses (available through Prime Video and Apple TV).
Morning #Movember run in Newmarket with the missus moustache.
Saw more Jews I know at the @MichaelRapaport show tonight than I did at Shul this morning. Thanks for helping us laugh during these difficult times!
Sent one kid back to school at @uofg but kid number 2 is in for a few days from her volunteer year of service in Israel so Chanukah Night 7 is still shining bright both in person and virtually!
Chanukah commemorates the indigenous Jewish population’s overthrow of colonialist Seleucid Greeks by the Hasmonean Jewish Maccabee family. This military victory restored Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel in 164BCE. /1
Tonight, on the 1st night of Chanukah 2023, my chanukiyas are surrounded by shards of Hasmonean pottery dating back to that same era. These archeological relics are so common in the soil at Beit Guvrin in Israel that tourists like myself are encouraged to take home a souvenir. 2/
Thank you to @CRRF for inviting me to @faclOntario’s celebration of the incredible career of Justice Maryka Omatsu. Justice Omatsu has blazed a trail for Asian women jurists and positively impacted the landscape for all Canadians with her life’s work. It was a wonderful event.
I’m currently travelling so I check my compass to know which direction Jerusalem is when I do my morning prayers.
Though normally the 7th morning blessing I’ve moved “free those in bondage” right to #1.
My final blessing is the call for Shalom - peace - to any and all.
Canada: land of contradictions.
Where the airport signs both welcome you and urge you not to enter all at the same time. 😂
St. John’s airport, Newfoundland: the only place where fishermen claim their catch is SMALLER than it is!
