South Africa's funeral industry is valued at over R10 billion, yet remains largely under-digitidsed, informally regulated and misunderstood, according to Aphiwe Khambule, Chief Operating Officer of 21st Century Funeral Services. Speaking to CNBC Africa's @PrudencePrudee on Africa Side Hustle, Khambule called for greater formalisation of uncertified operators, government intervention on cemetery shortages, and smarter adoption of AI to upskill staff rather than replace them. She urged aspiring entrepreneurs to prioritise purpose over profit, noting that trust and legacy take time to build.
