Two days ago, the 46th U.S. President @JoeBiden sent a shout out to encourage and uplift the Proud Stutter organization in #Philadelphia, #Pennsylvania. ⬇️
✉️ On Friday, President Biden sent the organization Proud Stutter this letter to celebrate their gathering in Philadelphia this week: "I send my warmest greetings to all those gathered at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for this evening’s Proud Stutter Gathering. I know from personal experience what it’s like growing up with a stutter. It’s hard and people can be cruel. As a boy, I would practice reciting Irish poems out loud over and over again. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but if you keep trying, it does get better. And while everyone’s experiences are different, I can still tell you that when you persevere in the face of struggle, you discover new strengths and skills you never thought you had. Those strengths will help you in many ways throughout your whole life. When I was a kid, my mother used to say, “Joey, remember: No one in the world is better than you, but everyone is your equal.” And I truly believe that. It’s the very idea that America is founded on—that every American has a right to be recognized and respected for who they are—and one that I worked every day of my Presidency to uphold. That’s why I am grateful for Proud Stutter and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Stuttering Program and their work to uplift, empower, and encourage people who stutter. Whether they are providing therapy services and coaching or building a vast community of people with verbal differences, they remind those that stutter that they are not alone. To everyone here today: Always know that a stutter doesn’t define a person—character and courage do. You can do anything, and I’m rooting for you." Joe Biden

International Stuttering Awareness Day (22 October) is approaching, and I’m thrilled to share with you the trailer of Proud Stutter, a powerful short film by Karina Sturn, featuring the incredible @MayaSharona This film beautifully captures Maya’s journey from struggling to “overcome” her stutter to embracing it as a unique part of her voice. Through her podcast, @ProudStutter, she’s creating a space for stuttering voices to be heard and celebrated. It’s a story of self-acceptance, connection, and strength. Check out the trailer below, and if you'd like to partner on a screening, you can reach out at [email protected]. #ProudStutter #StutteringAwareness #Inclusion #Stammering #Equity #InternationalStutteringAwarenessDay #Stuttering #WeAreBillionStrong

Thank you John. As a stutterer too, I find it disingenuous at best and offensive at worst to attribute his abysmal debate performance to his stutter. As I said the other day, ableism is certainly rampant this election cycle, but this is beyond the President’s disability.
Last week, millions witnessed Biden's frailty, his repeated freeze ups, his mouth hanging agape, his vacant stare into the middle distance, and his frequent inability to present a coherent thought. Such behaviors are not symptoms of stuttering, full stop. theatlantic.com/politics/arc…

The election may ultimately be decided by the economy and immigration, abortion and democracy. But the early phase has also been marked by a discussion, in ways both crass and subtle, of a far more personal topic — President Biden’s stutter. My latest: washingtonpost.com/politics/…

Last year, a young man named Harry wrote me a letter about what it’s like to live with a stutter. Tonight, I met him and his family in Milwaukee and shared some techniques I use to overcome mine. My message to Harry was simple: don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do.

Lorenzo is a college freshman who stutters studying speech therapy. He thinks positively about his future, but that wasn't always the case. “I put...my self worth in speaking, & since I couldn't speak...well, my self worth was down.” How do you find self-worth with a stutter?
