"GET YOUR FOOT DOWN EARLY!"...... something everyone has heard from the dugout or outside a batting cage.
But what does it even mean?
Baseball Savant doesn’t track when the front foot lands. It has no stride or foot-down number, but if an average fastball is about 94 mph, released about 54 feet from the plate. It takes about 0.40 seconds to reach the hitter.
Swing studies on pro hitters: the front foot usually lands about 0.15–0.25 seconds before contact. The middle of that range is about 0.2 seconds.....
meaning a hitters front foot lands when the ball is roughly 25–30 feet from home plate.
