Formula 1: Five things we've learned from the first half of the 2026 season
1. Max Verstappen is massively overrated.
The "gEnErAtiOnAL tALeNt" narrative only works for new F1 fans because Red Bull effectively operates four cars and a one-man team. We've repeatedly seen sister-team drivers interfere with rivals, provide slipstreams, or offer little resistance when Verstappen comes through. Lawson's assistance against Hamilton was just the latest example. It's remarkable how much external help is needed to maintain the "gEnErAtiOnAL tALeNt" storyline.
2. Success has bred overconfidence.
After years of benefiting from what many see as extraordinary FIA leniency and favorable circumstances including a robbed WDC and a cost-cap cheated WDC, Verstappen spent the opening part of the season complaining every race about regulations instead of adapting. He even sought validation in GT3 races against amateur and part-time drivers, yet failed to dominate there either. That contrast raised more questions than answers.
3. Ferrari innovations keep getting neutralized.
Whenever Ferrari appears to gain a technical edge, the FIA seems quick to intervene. Whether it was restrictions affecting Ferrari's starts, scrutiny of aerodynamic concepts such as the exhaust wing and floor, or repeated technical directives that conveniently level the playing field, innovation appears to be welcomed only until Ferrari is the one benefiting.
4. The commentary has become part of the marketing machine. Too many broadcasters rely on ex-Red Bull drivers and pundits who seem more interested in reinforcing the Verstappen narrative than calling races objectively. Even when Max isn't leading or isn't the central story on track, the commentary constantly circles back to him while drivers actually fighting for podiums receive far less attention. It often feels less like live analysis and more like a carefully maintained PR campaign, with commentators such as Martin Brundle, David Croft, Karen Chankhod, ex-Red Bull driver David Coulthard and Alex Jacques repeatedly steering the narrative back to Verstappen regardless of what's unfolding elsewhere on the circuit.
5. The FIA's inconsistency remains the biggest story.
Penalties, stewarding decisions and technical enforcement continue to lack consistency. Some drivers seem to receive endless benefit of the doubt, while Hamilton and Ferrari repeatedly find themselves on the wrong end of marginal calls. The perception of unequal treatment hasn't gone away, it has only grown stronger.
