@CeliaMRoberts: Biomedicine & technoscience & their models are crucial for making Human & reproduction. However, we must remember the 'mundane acts' that 'cut' the edges of reproduction (including, for example google algorithms and advertising and markets). #placentaproject

@anthro919 Natali Valdez highlights role of capitalism across scientific knowledge production, and esp racial capitalism. 'Free' apps require volunteering of extremely valuable bio-information - surveillance capitalism writ large.

@CeliaMRoberts reads from the beautiful symposium abstract #projectplacenta In deepening our knowledge about how human beings re"produce, scientific models reconstitute reproduction as a cultural form and a lived experience... (1/2)

@projectplacenta team describe placenta as liminal organ. Placenta organoids are 3D miniature tissues grown from stem cells, acting as 'another kind of living matter' that models placenta (crucially, not mimicry). Share a lot of similarity with cancer cells.

@JJKeaney & @jacdalziell present on their @SSNDeakin-funded project & forthcoming article on “Immortalising organs: Remodelling the placenta in vitro”. Draws on interview accounts to explore the gendered & reproductive norms at work in models of the placenta @ProjectPlacenta
3rd speaker in the fab @ProjectPlacenta symposium @reprotechethics of @Monash_Arts presents on @arc_gov_au-funded research & a recent co-authored paper on ‘mitochondrial replacement techniques & the erasure of the maternal’ #reprotech #gender #feminist #technoscience
Replying to @reprotechethics
@reprotechethics There's a counterintuitive element in mitochondrial rep tech that *seems* to be about women, whereas in fact the transfer of 'seed' idea to MRT and 'three parent babies' debates reinforce patriarchal norms #projectplacenta

2nd speaker in @ProjectPlacenta symposium @MiannaLotz explores the repro-norms & pro creative models of uterus transplantation (UTx). What are the inheritances of UTx & what reproductive norms does it materialize? Pronatalism, gender essentialism, reinforcing motherhood mandate
Replying to @ProjectPlacenta
@ProjectPlacenta Uterus transplantation and artificial uterus tech provoked discussion on container models of pregnancy, feminist motherhood debates, implications for abortion, adoption, exacerbated reproductive inequality 🙏@clairemlhorn @MiannaLotz
