Great question! I think there will have to be transformation on both sides: how EdTech approaches schools, and how schools are set up to adopt EdTech.
Ultimately, we hope to figure out what this looks like within our community of educators and entrepreneurs.
Whether you agree or disagree (or are simply curious about the premise), we’re going to be thinking and writing about it here: techined.substack.com/

In other words, our sector would be better served by understanding how to adopt more “Tech in Ed”, rather than simply adopt more “EdTech”
We should be:
- Supporting EdTech entrepreneurs in the early stages, especially ones with experience in the classroom
- Supporting schools in developing their capability to discover, evaluate, and adopt technology
- Championing models that are built to drive equitable outcomes
When we only think about funding and business models, the way we support the industry follows suit. It’s all pitch competitions and vying for investor attention and money.
What would it look like to champion impactful EdTech (whether it makes venture scale returns or not)?
Unfortunately, we treat the EdTech sector like any other tech sector. We worry more about who is getting invested in, which startups are (or will be) unicorns, what a startup’s traction is to date…
We never ask about how well an EdTech startup is creating learning outcomes.
*When* we achieve equitable learning outcomes for all learners, technology will have played an integral part of that achievement.
How and when will that happen, and are we at least headed the right way? We WILL get there, but we are not headed the right way - why?

I hosted a workshop today with education entrepreneurs in Boston and am so inspired by their vision, agility, and perseverance. In a highly-regulated and entrenched sector like education, entrepreneurship can be a tough journey. We should try to make it easier.
We’ve got designs to help support ITCs, but wouldn’t dream of doing it without co-designing it with them. Help us by voting for our #SXSWEdu workshop and helping to make this work a reality!

We’ve talked to so many Instructional Technology Coaches who are passionate about the positive effects technology can have in their teachers’ classrooms, and frustrated by being “caught in the middle”of procurement and support decisions.

We don’t think this is something we can ask in-classroom teachers to do. There’s already so much on their plate and we’ve asked too much of them over the past two years.
But there is someone in the school who already understands how to support in-class instruction with tech
