Britain's first official Overdose Prevention Centre opens in Glasgow this morning. I am grateful to everyone who has worked for many years to realise this. 5 years ago, I volunteered with @PeteKrykant_OPC to start the UK's first unofficial overdose prevention pilot. I said at the time, "At a street level, if it saves one person from contracting HIV or dying from an overdose, then it will have been worthwhile." We supervised 894 injections, reversed 9 overdoses, and saved 8 lives. Whilst it is not a universal remedy for Scotland’s drug death emergency, it will save lives and it will be a place where extremely marginalised people can get the help they need. I wish the team every success.

Drug use was criminalized in Sweden in 1988, and in 1993 imprisonment was introduced into the penalty scale, which allowed the police to take blood and urine samples on the basis of a suspicion of drug use. The goal was a drug-free Sweden ... 1/7
