you were not brought upon this world to get it

Taking comfort in knowing that A24 probably won't get around to releasing this in Australia until next October anyway
What you can’t remember will haunt you. Halloween is only the beginning in Jeremy Saulnier’s run-like-hell thriller SLAYGROUND, in theaters January 29.

"Did you think we were just going to be in and out like the wind?" ... "...YES. I THOUGHT THAT WAS YOUR WHOLE DAMN POINT."
No better line reading ever than Kurt Russell in Big Trouble in Little China going “Ya know it’s like Jack Burton always says…” “Who?” “Jack Burton. ME.”

This is a great beat because for once Jack isn't the overconfident fool getting himself into trouble - he follows Wang into a trap and gets understandably annoyed at him.

Hot take but this is arguably true of the "good" films she was doing 10-15 years ago (The Master innocent)
at some point we all need to accept that amy adams probably just has bad taste

Whether it's switching up on Arrival and Her or never liking American Hustle and Nocturnal Animals in the first place, I do think her career hasn't so much fallen off a cliff as kept rolling down a very short hill

Would be a good bit to watch Klara and the Sun and start calling it Taika's best in at least 10 years (if not ever), but there's no way I trust him to handle a movie about AI

Seems like the best movies about AI/artificial beings do understand that at best they're Frankensteinian mistakes of scientific hubris where they're arguably better off "dead" even when they are humanised and made sympathetic e.g. Blade Runner or A.I.

Rewatched Saw II. Not surprised to learn this started off as an original script since it already feels so far from what the original was going for, but I guess they were able to build off it in later entries?

We Bury the Dead begins as a seemingly novel take on the zombie genre with its tale of post-outbreak clean-up, but it loses sight of that amidst an increasingly anticlimactic journey through all-too-familiar tropes.

Rewatched Thief. Catching it in a theatre helps to really notice all sorts of granular details I'd never caught before, which is ideal when it comes to appreciating a story of painfully precise professionalism.

Rewatched F13 Part 3. I do prefer the sequels when they actually have something resembling a wacky hook than these straightforward early exercises in slasher mayhem. I've seen this at least 3 or 4 times and barely remember anything about it.

Scream, Queen! is a decent enough documentary tracing the legacy of ANOES 2 and how it ties into the bigger pictures of both the horror genre and queer history and how they intersect. Slight, but interesting enough.

Watched Hobgoblins. I've seen quite a few movies from MST3K without their riffing and this one might just be the worst I've seen yet.

Rewatched Blow Out. Not quite my favourite De Palma but in many ways his quintessential masterpiece, finding the perfect narrative to match his established technical and thematic preoccupations.

Just going to put this out there - if you're going to reply with what you think should've won instead, at least pick from the other nominees. Otherwise, it's just too easy to pick your favourite film that came out that year.
Best Picture winners of the 2000s – which was truly the least deserving?
