How universal is friendship? Anthropologist Peter Sutton writes in the Politics of Suffering: "In Far North Queensland, and many times later, I was struck by the translations people offered for the English word ‘friend’. The literal meanings of the answers ranged from a marriageable type of cousin, to lover or sweetheart, to fellow initiation novice, to a term for ‘company’ (as in keeping a visitor company by sleeping at the same fire)—there were probably others—but the common factor was simply that there was no one-to-one equivalence for the European conception of friendship."

This is precisely the kind of thing that could happen in Australia unless the Albanese government enacts legislation to protect natal female only spaces.

The sharp increase and then decrease in LGB identity in the USA in just ten years is quite striking. Amongst year 12 students it rose from 7% in 2015 to 18% in 2023 before falling to 16%. Prof Twenge calls this relative stability. I would call it wild fluctuation.@jean_twenge
Identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) has plummeted among younger teens in 2025 in the nationally representative YRBS survey from the CDC. Older teens show relative stability, consistent with data from young adults.

This is a significant new decision concerning the provision of toilets in a primary school. The judge found that the school 's arrangements amounted to indirect discrimination against girls because, after toileting, they had to wash their hands in a common area shared with boys.
The Scottish Court of Session has just ruled that providing multi-user unisex toilets in a primary school amounted to indirect sex discrimination against female pupils. scotcourts.gov.uk/media/mv5d…

The decision does not rest upon any peculiarities of Scottish or British law. The reasoning would be equally applicable to the Sex Discrimination Act in Australia.

Other aspects of the decision are specific to Scottish regulations but not the finding in relation to indirect discrimination

The Giggle case raises a fundamental issue of societal organisation, akin to whether the State will allow private property. Trans rights need to be accommodated where possible, but not at the expense of ignoring basic differences between sexes.@salltweets @aytchellesse @DoNoHarm79
I posted this elsewhere but it bears repeating: I’m a gay left-wing atheist, and Albanese is my local member as well as my PM. I’m pretty much a lifelong Labor voter. I’m certainly no right wing religious zealot. Yet Labor lost my vote last Friday. I wrote to the PM about this issue and got a passive-aggressive response from a staffer that talked about Liberals and tax policy, and didn’t even address my complaint. It told me everything I needed to know. A party that can’t stand up for simple dignity and safety for women and girls is a party that I cant trust on any issue.

A trans adult says trans issues should not be taught in schools. "All you do is confuse children by essentially marketing a way to be special and get attention." The marketing of trans-identification in primary schools must stop.
I don’t think children should be exposed to transsexuality until they are much older. It’s shouldn’t be in the schools. It shouldn’t be on television. No one needed to tell me I wanted to be a girl. For an actual trans child, it’s all they’re ever gonna think about. All you do is confuse children by essentially marketing a way to be special and get attention. Some of these kids will play around with gender presentation. Parents should stop that bullying instantly. Give kids space to figure out who they are. But the reality is, we cannot sort out the actual trans girls from the gay boys until they are like 12 and puberty starts onsetting. I would not allow my child to change pronouns or name before then.

This is a fascinating article by Michael Biggs and a colleague. Michael has done so much to expose falsehoods and misunderstandings about transgender issues in Britain. What this article shows clearly is that, while numbers are fortunately low, rather more transgender persons are perpetrators of homicide than are the victims of it. Yet you would not know this from media reporting, which has bought the line that transgender people are disproportionately murder victims. A must -read article correcting yet another misunderstanding.
Who are "the most vulnerable in society"? New paper by Michael Biggs and Ace North: "It analyzes all homicides involving transgender people in Britain from 2000 to 2025. Victims were outnumbered by perpetrators, even excluding those who declared a transgender identity after imprisonment. Almost all cases involved natal males identifying as transwomen. The victim-perpetrator ratio among these individuals closely resembles that for males overall and differs markedly from that for females." papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.…

Part of the tragedy of @Jilliantweeting's three year suspension (so far) is that she has largely not been able to practise her profession as a child and adolescent psychiatrist when there is a mountain of need. This is shameful, @childhealthqld; @TimNichollsMP.

Yes. It is not about protecting patients. It is about punishment for not towing the line - a line which has now become discredited internationally.

UPDATE ON IMPORTANT NEW FINLAND STUDY | Professor Kaltiala has responded to criticism of the Finnish study, which found that mental health may get worse after young people undergo medical gender transition. One critique of the study argues that psychiatric appointments are part and parcel of the gender-transition process in Finland and therefore may not point to serious psychiatric morbidity. In their paper, Professor Kaltiala and her colleagues acknowledged the limitation that their study could not analyse in detail why these patients needed psychiatric services. Asked about this issue, she told me that the healthcare register data used for the study included diagnoses and in-patient periods but not treatment nor information about a patient’s problems related to family life, romantic relationships or work. However, Professor Kaltiala said the young people seen by specialised psychiatric services in her country would have “severe disorders”. These services were focused on “those really in need”, consistent with national criteria for health equity. “In Finland, you do not get admitted to specialist-level services if you don’t have mental disorders at all or [have only] mild disorders and problems,” she said. “Primary-level services are available for needs related to milder disorders and psychosocial difficulties.” She said the gender-referred youth in the new study were much more likely than matched controls to have a history of severe mental disorders, often dating back some years before they reached the gender clinic. “Thus, many developed feelings of gender dysphoria in the context of severe disorders,” she said. “Severe mental disorders during adolescence generally have potential to complicate identity development. It rather seems that feelings of gender dysphoria are sometimes secondary to severe mental disorders.” If it were the other way around, and the mental disorders were secondary to the dysphoria, those disorders would be “expected to subside with medical gender reassignment”, according to the Dutch treatment protocol adopted internationally, she said. But this did not happen in the new Finnish study. Instead, the need for specialist psychiatric services—and therefore the scale of serious mental disorders—increased after medical transition, as the study by Professor Kaltiala and her colleagues reported. I guess they didn't teach these people about control groups in their gender studies degree.

Control groups let researchers compare a group to the general population, to establish a baseline and evaluate whether rates of issues are abnormal. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10… In the Finnish studies, it showed persistent high needs pre- and post-referral, not clearly reduced by medical transition. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ap…
