ALT Letter to the editor, Santa Cruz Sentinel, May 7, 2023 Thank you for your May 3 Editorial on Santa Cruz’s housing dilemmas. What’s missing is that UCSC plans to build just 140 low-density units across 12 acres of land on the East Meadow site. This means that more of the East Meadow site will become asphalt and parking than actual living spaces for student families. These new parking lots will bring hundreds more cars into Santa Cruz, slowing our buses and making our city less safe for pedestrians and cyclists. The space could accommodate hundreds more units in a transit- oriented development that positions student housing toward bike paths, walkways and bus stops, instead of toward parking spaces. If UCSC cared about student housing, then it would not squander the precious East Meadow to hastily designed sprawl. UCSC is telling the world that it values its parking spaces more than its housing, and even more than its unique natural beauty. Mark Massoud, UC Santa Cruz Professor
