My @mitpress “Citizenship” 📕 is subject of an erudite review in @nybooks, @atossaaraxia taking #statelessness as a starting point BUT: #Citizenship, NOT statelessness is the problem! @eksmo_live @edizionimulino @univgroningen mitpress.mit.edu/books/citiz…

“I think the threat of Eastern Europe and all of Europe becoming more like Putin’s Russia, of security concerns being used to justify more control, of whole countries being taken over by political police and intelligence officers, as happened in Russia — all of that has been a very strong motivation for me to warn about this danger.”

I wish sensible people would realize that the most important thing --like in July 1914-- is to stop the slide towards a general war. Only once we do so, we can go back to trying to reinvent the international system, everything from inequality to climate change.
But to believe we can do it in today's conditions with raging wars and with nobody trusting anybody is not only impossible but represents a waste of energy.
Indeed, Intellectual energy is wasted on unrealizable tasks b/c the true origin of the problem is not recognized.

Threats of political persecution’s against me in Latvia (via tweets by senior officials and anonymous sources) illustrate the disappearance of safe space for intellectually honest debate about the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. Said that on @BBCRadio4 last night.

On the Dark Continent (Inter-war Europe), I remember a well-known professor writing on a transition country (the topic was very popular then and many people who knew nothing about Eastern Europe ventured on it) and in the intro paragraph he wrote something like "X was before the war a part of European democratic mainstream".
Democratic mainstream? I was in disbelief: Nazi Germany & Fascist Austria, Fascist Italy, Fascist Hungary, Fascist Spain, semi-Fascist Portugal, all East European royal autocracies, military dictatorship in Poland...Wasn't the real European mainstream "fascism"?

Although still in "early view", this contribution remains a vitally important analysis, drawing on the critical work of Petra Bárd, Laurent Pech, Omer Shatz, Sarah Ganty and other wonderful collaborators: cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Nobody can take seriously European complaints about China. China is now building things better and more cheaply than Germany or France. When France and Germany built things better and more cheaply than others, they ridiculed such complaints. Now they are losing and not liking it.
Moreover, Europe came to that position by exploiting the rest of the world. China did not.

Gareth Davies (VU Amsterdam) argues that because the Court of Justice reads the scope of EU law so broadly and leaves no room for value diversity within it, it is legally no longer possible to be a conservative state in the EU. Recommended. legaltheoryblog.com/?p=11231…
Death of🇪🇺EU as cutting edge knowledge production site. There are more top Universities from essentially provincial city of Hong Kong in top 20 (2, total for 🇨🇳China - 4) than the EU(0). This is what the lack of leadership and overall intellectual and economic decline look like.

Future generations of Russians will look at statues of Navalny, walk through squares and streets named after him, and curse the corrupt and mediocre autocrat who murdered him and devastated a generation of Russians and Ukrainians.
Today, Alexei Navalny would have turned 50.
Alexei was a person of extraordinary courage, strength, and faith in people. He changed Russian politics forever, showing that those in power can be challenged, corruption can be investigated, fear can be overcome, and that a free Russia is worth fighting for even under the harshest conditions.
Memorial events in Alexei’s honor will take place in cities around the world today. Check the list of events to find your city and join us: docs.google.com/spreadsheets…

Perhaps that AI will bring us back to the medieval conception of production & dissemination of knowledge: monks who copied what was already written & known. Those with the best calligraphy were held in highest esteem. New researchers will have AI write their papers & the best researcher will be the one who selected the coolest AI stuff.
A topic for Borges. Knowledge will be a fixed sum of things and the best bricolage of what is known (by all) would be called science.
