I'm excited to share that my paper "Does Meeting Style Matter" has been published in the @apsrjournal. The study leverages a school district that embedded direct response to public comment into its meeting structure.
Here's the paper and a long thread:

You do realize that standardized tests dont measure โeveryday reading skills,โ right? Weโre talking about more advanced analytic skills: comprehension, making, inferences, comparing across passages. These people arent walking around completely illiterate. Do your homework.

Iโm pretty sure that reading is part of everyday life for every adult. You do realize that the bottom of the curve has been getting larger and lower. Meaning many many kids are not going to be able to do any of the jobs you listed.

@ChalkbeatNY @lapham_katie @NYCoRE3000 @MOREcaucusUFT have y'all heard about teachers having problems with getting paid on time from the DOE? tryna see if it's just me.
This is laughable. A defense of test scores (that doesnโt even address my point) from someone running a Gifted & Talented grift?? Itโs a shame you dropped out. You clearly have A LOT to learn.

This is literally all Iโm trying to say. Do we need to serve kids better? Yes. Better instruction. MORE instruction.
Do we need to raise scores? OBVIOUSLY.
But we canโt talk as if the people failing tests in the meantime are complete wastes. Everyone deserves DIGNITY.

I had a good friend who drove truck most of his life. He left school ~10th grade.
He wouldn't have scored 'proficient' on one of these tests.
But he was much better served by school than hundreds of thousands of kids today.
Iโd be offended if I didnโt expect personal attacks on my institution instead of an actual intellectual exchange, but one cannot exchange what one does not have. Iโm sure his test scores were great though ๐
Nothing screams โIโm out of touchโ more than the so-called โreformersโ who act like the kids who donโt show proficiency on a state test become adults incapable of any basic functioning whatsoever. โ1-3 kids arenโt proficient in reading. I hope they donโt forget to breatheโ ๐
Pretty words, but awkward: fewer than three in ten NYC public school kids are proficient in reading; two in ten in math. And they don't have rich parents to support them into adulthood like the Mayor had. Any talk about "future greatness" and children having "support and public goods" is bullshit until you fix that.

Calipari, his assistant coaches, and staff all have the potential to earn that salary for decades. The players have a 4 year window; shorter if they get a significant injury. This is nonsense.
"I'm gonna say this, I probably shouldn't: nine of my players make more than my assistants. And the other three make more than all my staff, and we are not one of the highest payers..."

Federal investigators say they have identified 35 additional women who may have been targeted by Daejon Love, bringing the number of potential victims to 61.
Love allegedly posed as a San Francisco 49ers player on dating apps and built romantic relationships with women before convincing them to send money for fraudulent investments. Prosecutors say alleged co-conspirator Taylor Chan posed as Loveโs financial adviser and helped create fake financial documents to support the scheme. The pair faces wire fraud and conspiracy charges in connection with an alleged $1.3 million scheme that operated from 2022 until their August arrest.

I get itโs NYC, but itโs criminal (pun intended) that Black mayors in places like Memphis and Baltimore donโt get anywhere close to the praise Mamdani gets for the progress theyโve made in cities that have far less resources.
