Beautiful late 19th century anthology of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. "Song of Hiawatha" is about a real Iroquois figure but in the poem he is Ojibwe and lives in what is now Michigan's Upper Peninsula "On the shores of Gitche Gumee," or Lake Superior. nps.gov/long/learn/historycu… (link). You can tour Longfellow's house in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The house was also Washington's HQ during the Siege of Boston, 1775-1776. nps.gov/long/index.htm (link).

Pres. Herbert Hoover established Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in 1931. He loved fishing, incidentally. The Civilian Conservation Corps later did a great deal of work there. In the 1960s, Hiawatha merged with Marquette National Forest, established by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt in 1909. fs.usda.gov/r09/hiawatha/r… (link). TR also loved the outdoors. Surprised to open a book titled, Young England, and see a cowboy. Published in London. No year given but based an airplane illustration and other details from a brief perusal, I think this is mid-1920s. Wide variety of stories and illustrations. May go back for it, looked super interesting.

It seems French aviator Joseph Thoret was planning to supply a scientific observatory on Mont Blanc by air. nytimes.com/1926/09/01/archi… (link). Here's a photo of him flying over the Alps, just like in the illustration: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/F… (link). Interesting!

Full bookcase in the Eisenhower parlor. Ida's boys were not allowed in this fine front room except to borrow books. They had to take them elsewhere to read and put them back carefully. Money was tight but education was a priority. It's important to develop a habit of reading while you're very young. eisenhowerlibrary.gov/ (link).

I say follow Colonial Williamsburg's example and decorate for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all at once. Above all, good people, don't neglect to bedeck your cannons. Photo 2025.
