It’s a great question- wonder if our @CDCgov domestic malaria friends have thoughts on why we haven’t seen (curiously the last year of this graph happened to be the last local case reported until now)? Importation keeps increasing (cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/ss/s…) so it seems surprising

This is some pretty important contextual information w/ respect to the recent report of local #malaria transmission in the United States. Is there a reason why we haven't seen any for the past 20 years? Or have we just not been paying enough attention?
Replying to @Fredros_Inc @NoorAbdisalan
I'd argue that the last 20 years with no local transmission is more anomalous than the recent outbreak! Scott Filler published this back in 2006 showing local cases by year... we even had a cluster here in NYC back in 1993: cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtm…

DNA analysis of human blood taken by mosquitoes show that School-Age Children are Key Players in Malaria Transmission in Malawi
~
Malaria mosquitoes do not select their human hosts randomly; and they rarely bite multiple people. This study (by Mbewe et al) analysed DNA of blood from humans and mosquitoes from Malawian homes to identify which individuals were most frequently bitten by [infected] malaria mosquitoes. They showed that school-age children (6-15 yrs old) were the most important demographic group contributing to mosquito-borne transmission, despite being under-represented in mosquito blood meals. Males aged 31-75 years old were over-represented in mosquito blood meals, but school-age children had the highest prevalence of malaria-infected blood meals. These findings suggest that malaria control efforts should prioritize targeting school-age children and males to effectively reduce transmission. In other words. Kids Count.

Malaria is holding back economies, communities, and families from achieving their potential.
But it's women & girls who bear the brunt of this impact 👭👭🏽
By ending malaria, we will improve economic growth, advance gender equality and bend the curve on poverty 🦟🚫
