Chess is brutal, but also intimate. It’s a kind of symbiotic cognition in which we can feel each other’s pain as one shared feeling. What strikes me about this video is not so much Ivanchuk’s desolation but Naroditsky’s empathetic awkwardness- it almost looks like an apology.
The haunting final moments of the Round 11 clash between Vassily Ivanchuk and Daniel Naroditsky in World Blitz 2024. Caïssa is a cruel goddess indeed...

🆘 PLEASE SHARE 🙏🏻 🆘 Activist Okey Vitalis Nnorom who joined the Omar AlMokhtar Flotilla sailing alongside the Global Sumud Flotilla, remains in detention, despite earlier false reports claiming he was handed over to the Nigerian embassy in Jordan. The occupation authorities deliberately obfuscated information and misled lawyers about the detainees’ status. Supporters are called on to contact their local Nigerian embassy and the Nigerian government to demand Michael’s immediate release.

Replying to @AdamBienkov
So our PM says that protesting against Israel's genocide is "un-British", and that what happens to British citizens seized by Israel is a matter for Israel. Is "Britishness" about what best serves the interests of the Israeli state? I wrote more here: medium.com/@pscjd/is-protest…

Britain agrees to give up sovereignty of the Chagos Islands - its last African colony - while retaining use of the UK-US military base on Diego Garcia A look back at the cable that revealed the UK-US plan to establish a marine reserve to "make it difficult, if not impossible" for Chagossians to return home wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/0…

If you get your commentary from X, the Daily Mail or GB News you might get the impression that a lot of people in Britain are opposed to climate action or think we're moving too fast That couldn't be further from the truth

There's been much said recently about soup throwing and other protests targetting galleries and museums, but little analysis of why protestors target artworks This paper looks fascinating, and contends that these are "legitimate sites for protest and acts of civil disobedience"
Happy news! Thanks to the publisher Brill and to our colleagues at the journal Protest, our paper on the museum and art galleries protest is now “open access” until October 15th!!! We discuss art, tactics, the climate crisis and punishment. brill.com/view/journals/prot…

Even as a politics lecturer in a Middle East department, I am lost. Israel has a right to self defence, but Lebanon does not? Israelis have the right to be safe, but Palestinians do not? Iran can’t launch missiles into civilian areas, but Israel can? None of this is coherent.
"We stand with Israel, and recognise her right to self defence in the face of this aggression." UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is addressing the British public after Iran launched missiles towards Israel. trib.al/df1dN4r 📺 Sky 501

If someone is convicted of criminal damage & serves an ordinary sentence for criminal damage, they're an ordinary criminal. If they're sentenced to many years more prison than ordinary criminals, purely because of their political motivations, then they're a political prisoner.
Legal note: Nobody is “in prison for demanding an end to new oil and gas”. Literally nobody. Throwing paint over historic artworks does not make you “a prisoner of conscience”. It just makes you guilty of criminal damage.

It's now been 10 days. Will any journalist today ask a Labour representative about the largest donation in their history which they conveniently declared after the election was over?
It's been nearly a week since this story broke. Has anyone got a single example of a journalist asking a Labour representative about it? It's a huge dereliction of duty from the press. opendemocracy.net/en/labour-…

It's almost like the very purpose of these bots is to make extreme right wing views seem much more popular and mainstream than they are
Don't be fooled by the cacophony of climate deniers & bots celebrating ridiculously harsh sentences handed down to climate activists - it's a noisy minority. The great majority of the UK public don't want prison sentences for nonviolent disruptive protest. xitter.cf/ProfColinDavis/status/…
