I’m an ancient historian, not a political pundit, but my two cents. With the richest man failing to earn political prestige at home, I expect Musk will now attempt to lead an army into Parthia.

Where the Romans fought: 1,709 land and sea battles, from Romulus (753 BCE) to the fall of Theodoro (1475), in 44 of today’s countries. Rome won 916, drew 41, lost 512; 236 more were civil wars. Interactive map, full list, the Roman armies, sources: iosiflazaridis.github.io/bat…
Where did the ancient Greeks fight, whom did they fight, and who won? I mapped all 713 recorded land and sea battles of the Greek city-states and kingdoms, from c. 700 BCE to the last Greek kingdoms. In this thread: the places, the record of every state and the full list. 1/

I've added an extra discussion on my substack looking into some of the empirical economic history claims made by some advocates of degrowth: that "capitalism" lowered living standards in early modern Europe markkoyama.com/p/more-on-deg… These claims are both influential but also disconcerting. Disconcerting because they cite data collected by economic historians like Robert Allen to draw conclusions that are directly opposed to those any economic historians would draw from them.

"Who has the strongest SOS?" "The SEC." "Why?" "Because they play a bunch of SEC teams." "How good are SEC teams?" "Really good, because they play a bunch of SEC teams." "How do you know if SEC teams are better than teams from other conferences?" "They are better, because they play a lot more SEC teams than teams from other conferences."
This season, the SEC will start a 9-game conference schedule 🗓️ A likely result of the additional conference game is that every SEC team has a strength of schedule in the Top-20, according to ESPN Analytics.

Hear me out: FIFA should let every team on Earth into the World Cup -Start with geographically based groups -Spread the matches out over 2.5-3 years -Have the top 32 or 48 teams from those groups meet in a single country for one last tournament to determine the winner Thoughts?
From @TheAthleticFC: Gianni Infantino said FIFA will examine expanding the World Cup by a further 16 nations to a 64-team tournament ahead of its next edition in 2030. The 2030 tournament will be spread across six nations and three continents. nyti.ms/4bjW73o

I talked a dad who told me he spent $10k a year on travel baseball between tourneys, travel, and gear for his son. He got a partial scholarship to D-2 school. If he had put the $10k in a mutual fund each year, he would have had about $190,000. The scholarship was $5k a year.

If you want to "raise a D1 athlete" here's what works: 1. Stop trying to raise a D1 athlete Support your kid. Let them play whatever they want to play. Drive them to practice But it's got to come from them. They've got to want it. You can't force it. 2. Have great genetics

Here are 4 reasons 24 team CFP is an awful idea from somebody who was all for expansion to 8 or 16: 1. Coaches will rest players in rivalry games if they are already guaranteed a playoff spot. 2. You ONLY want teams in CFP that can win 3. Foolishly believe ACC/Big 12 will get more of additional 12 than SEC/Big Ten. They will lobby until they get 16 of 24 slots. 4. Fans are frustrated w/12 team rankings and sure how can ADs etc have time to watch all these teams. Image them having to rank 40-50?
The loudest voices against expanding the playoffs seem to fit some of the following categories 1. Grew up in the 90’s 2. SEC fans. 3. Employed by ESPN Here’s why 👇👇👇
