41 years ago this month, Commodore put one of the most atmospheric computer ads ever made on television. A lone figure in a gray jumpsuit walks impossible, shadowy staircases that feel like Escher (the Dutch artist that drew the never ending staircase) designed them. He approaches a glowing Amiga 1000 as if it were a relic. He presses the Amiga button and then the screen blooms into that unforgettable 2001-style Star Child moment and the line drops: “Re-experience the mind unbounded. Amiga, the first personal computer that gives you a creative edge.” It aired in late September 1985, just weeks after the Amiga’s Lincoln Center launch. While other computers were still selling beige boxes and text, Commodore tried something cinematic — part Apple's “1984,” part Kubrick, all mood. The ad didn’t demo Deluxe Paint or the Boing Ball. It sold a feeling: that this machine could open something bigger. And in a way it was right. The Amiga 1000 really was years ahead — 4,096 colors, stereo sound, true multitasking, animation that looked like it belonged in a studio.
