I still remember the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. The very next day, 9/11 became a topic in the mosque. People were celebrating, saying, “Alhamdulillah, the kuffar will be wiped out! In Sha Allah!”
I was young. I didn’t understand the weight of what I was hearing. Looking back now, I’m ashamed that I was ever part of a belief system where the deaths of thousands of people could be met with celebration.
But I try not to blame my younger self. I was born into Islam. I was raised in it. I was taught to believe it before I was old enough to question it. I carried it into adulthood until I finally started questioning everything and walked away.
I didn’t choose the religion I was born into. I chose to leave it.
