Reminder, my profile banner is my literal brain. Transformed from the Hospital data, into a live explorable copy of me.
This is absolutely insightful and explains so many things regarding how I feel about Resonite. I couldn't find the words for it until now.
First, Orange, thank you for your words and all your service to the community. I understand that these are your feelings and you don't have some kind of proof. I acknowledge I am going against your desires for people not to write impressions, but this meant enough to me to make me want to write something. Thus, I take full responsibility for the words and interpretations here. I have to rely on a translation, but here's what I have personally gathered from this, starting with some translation excerpts from the video:
"I thought Resonite was aiming at a big world ... But I came to feel that, in practice, it is now heading toward a small house."
"A small house is ... a place where the person who built the house, the homeowner, and the family and neighbors around them can spend time comfortably ... And I am not saying a small house is bad ... I think a small house is great. Making, with your own hands, a place that's easy for you to live in - that's wonderful. It's precious. Building a place for yourself from the ground up is an incredibly noble thing."
"...the big world - is a worldview where anyone, everyone, can have their own house inside this world ... A big world, to me, really is all kinds of people ... you wander in, and if you decide to build your ideal world right here, you can just build it. A world with that kind of room ... I think the small house is wonderful. I just don't live in that house. I had believed this was the big-world side. It wasn't..."
My thoughts: Resonite's primary problem is that it is the small house, or at least is heavily aligning toward it. The community, through the influence of top-down leadership and staffed volunteers, combined with bottom-up pressure from the community that was attracted by these cultural ideals creates a feedback loop. The community is gradually aligned, incident by incident, conversation by conversation, towards a single culture. Resonite doesn't operate like a business, it operates like a house.
Back when I was a NeosVR moderator, I had a deep desire to influence particular goals that would support the big world I wanted to see: We keep our finger on the pulse of the people and prioritize the tools the community needs to organize and moderate themselves, choose what they engage with, and moderate their own sessions (their houses). We let Frooxius build the engine for all people to create. We only handle hacking, persistent harassment, illegal behavior, etc., other sensible things of that nature. It wasn't our job to make the culture. Warning sign after warning sign was encountered (I still encounter them to this day). I left. This vision was not to be, and I stepped back and gave up trying to make NeosVR better.
Whether or not you like the direction of the culture is irrelevant. If the culture of a community becomes completely aligned, it limits the discussion, it limits the viewpoints, and it forces out all the people who think differently. It does not stay inoculated with the big world, and it will be scared of the big world. It stays comfy and scared in its own little house. This happened to Reddit, Bluesky, and other platforms. It inherently forces itself to stagnate and earn the derision of many.
I don't want to give up on Resonite. I have already given my own reason for stopping my funding. But I think this is now another reason. I don't know if it's possible for Resonite to go back to the big world, given what I know about leadership. Power is not easily let go of by those holding it. It's intimidating to confront a fellow occupant in the house, if that's what it actually is.
Resonite says it wants to be the big world, but it will never be in this state. If the current course continues, it will most likely stagnate as the most beautiful and creative house that I've ever seen.
In the spirit of Orange's message, don't let this make you gloomy. Every day is a gift, and there are more important things to live for. I will find and go to the people, friends, places, and communities that make me happy.
"Look toward the fun things and the world looks brighter. So let's spend our days happily." -🍊

As someone who also does traditional art, It will forever insult me the "it's the process" crowd.
There were drawings I spent hours on and others I spent days on. And in no point did I ever considered any more or less artistic than the other.
It's an insult to art and to artists.
Disney is less artistic because they can pump an animation in a month were an indie artist would take him a year?
Is stop-motion more artistic than 3D or pupeteering because it requires more care?
Process can be an art; yes. But it is never THE art.
Art is your message, the emotions you felt when making it, the emotions you want to evoke on others. The awe of showing yourself to the masses.
Dancing, singing, writing, it's all the same. It's you.

My autistic brain does not care for concepts of authority.
The idea that someone is right, just because of their status, and not the substance of their argument, is illogical.
