The woman, Mary discovers only then that she’s not legally the child’s mother which was an intentional act by the father prior to the birth. She’s petitioning to be the mother of the son (born 2018) legally.

A legit/nonforced messy (interesting) surrogacy case out of NV. Dating/cohabitating couple raising a child together that is biologically his but not hers & via a surrogate break up several years later & he blocks her from seeing him. 🧵/1

Do you know anyone who has been helped by human in vitro fertilisation (IVF) therapy?
Robert Edwards was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize for the development of human in vitro fertilisation (IVF) therapy. His achievements made it possible to treat infertility, a medical condition afflicting a large proportion of humanity.
As early as the 1950s, Edwards had the vision that IVF could be useful as a treatment for infertility. He worked systematically to realise his goal, discovered important principles for human fertilisation, and succeeded in accomplishing fertilisation of human egg cells in test tubes (or more precisely, cell culture dishes).
His efforts were finally crowned by success on 25 July, 1978, when the world’s first “test tube baby” was born. During the following years, Edwards and his co-workers refined IVF technology and shared it with colleagues around the world.

None of us can be experts on everything. But it behooves us to learn about a subject before commentating, particularly those with larger platforms. The way IVF is typically done viable embryos aren’t destroyed.
There are exceptions of course & policies to promote to mitigate them
I am not an IVF absolutist. I am not persuaded that it is per se wrong to use non-sexual techniques to help married heterosexual couples conceive.
I am opposed to IVF as it is regularly practiced. That is, I am opposed to the fertilizing and implanting of more embryos than a woman is willing, or reasonably able, to carry.
This is largely done for economic reasons, but that is nothing like a good justification.
I’m also not opposed to surrogacy, per se. But I am opposed to how it is regularly practiced, too.
I am not persuaded that simply because we do something wrong now there is no way in which we might do it right.
Still, if we cannot create a framework that prevents the deliberate destruction of embryonic life - and to be clear, I think we can - then we should outlaw the whole thing. Better to lose the miracle than to use it for evil.

A small study found IVF kids had a slightly ⬆️ amount of LINE1 DNA in blood than conventionally conceived kids. But couldn’t determine if most variants were inherited, establish they’re IVF caused, & the genomic associations can’t identify an IVF child in spite of the headline
When asked for a source on this: nada. Anecdotes aren’t data.
The data on modern surrogacy does not show harm to newborns or children later in life. The biggest issue is breastfeeding. But that’s not a moral issue or unique to surrogacy
What’s next down the pike for the McKenna West saga is filing for writ of certiorari to the full court. This is a Due Process claim and winning would not give her custody of the baby.
That is not going to happen no matter what she tries.

Most people transfer all their embryos. Destruction is not inherent to IVF. People get stuck on edge cases and don’t understand most embryos fail regardless of conception, but IVF is only showing the process, not causing it

Science is rad.
Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome used to be a guaranteed loss of one or both babies. Over the decades techniques to this intervention have improved significantly saving far more babies from death.
