“If race or class war divides us into hostile camps, changing political argument into blind hate...the road to dictatorship will be open to any man who can persuasively promise security to all, and a martial government...will engulf the democratic world.” — Will Durant (1968)

The problem of our time is not merely information overload. It is that the time required to construct a coherent understanding of reality is becoming longer than the time during which that understanding remains valid.

In the way the mirrors show us our bodies, is AI the the silicon mirror to our brains?

Can you be conscious if you're not alive? And for the model consciousness camp, is the implication that models are alive?

You need to be at frontier AI dev/use (labs, AI for science, robotics, physical AI etc) or unlocking human potential at scale (real world data, AI-native system integrators). Everything else feels ephemeral.

Been thinking a lot of about useful vs non useful human frictions in achieving positive AI outcomes in the world

Is consciousness the capacity to override one's own intrinsic reward mechanisms?

Brilliant
Silicon Valley keeps building me a husband when what I really want is a wife lol I don't want an agent that only does one-off, random tasks that are nice but not life-changing: booking flights, making dinner reservations, or buying tickets I want an AI wife who knows what’s on the family calendar, remembers there’s a birthday party Saturday and we haven’t bought a gift then sends me options, realizes we’re almost out of diapers and buys them, knows which bills are coming up, remembers someone needs a dentist appointment and books it, figures out what the hell we’re eating all week and what we need from the grocery store, and generally keeps track of the 47 things that need to happen before anyone else even realizes they need to happen. So, who's building me an AI wife that carries the mental load instead of an AI husband that waits for me to give it a chore??

And here I thought the Twitter -> X rebrand was hard to get used to.

I (sadly) see a very near future where affiliations with frontier labs or even just agreeing with people working there will become akin to red / blue political party affiliations - a litmus test of your ideology. I believe this is a bad outcome, creating more entrenched echo chambers rather than idea labs. @waitbutwhy

This is a positive step in the current fog
The AI Evaluator Forum (AEF) welcomes recent statements regarding the importance of embedded independent experts to verify AI safety and security claims. This is a first step towards trustworthy oversight of frontier AI. No single evaluator can do this work alone. A vibrant ecosystem of independent evaluators from distinct backgrounds can offer a range of expertise and methodology, help to ensure rigor, and avoid a single point of failure. The Forum exists to strengthen this ecosystem. Realizing the benefits of third-party evaluations also requires independence, access, and transparency. AEF brings evaluators together to address these questions. Our first standard, AEF-1: Minimum Operating Conditions for Independent Third-Party AI Evaluations, envisions a minimum floor for access, managing conflicts of interest, funding relationships, recusal requirements, and transparency of evaluation terms. Read more here: aievaluatorforum.org/initiat… The long-term success of third-party evaluation relies on standards and frameworks. AEF is committed to developing these with its members and collaborators. We welcome engagement from organizations committed to rigorous, independent work. Learn more about AEF, express interest in joining, and raise questions for us here: aievaluatorforum.org/

If it can be done, should it be done? vs If it can be done, it will be done.

It's not possible to keep up with all of the various dramas in the world. It's amazing that people expect you to have an opinion about everything. I mean, it's flattering they think I'm capable of such things.....

100%, this is going to be one of the most important roles in the world - the people will need to be of incredible integity and technical expertise, and be drawn from a wide enough set of backgrounds that all of society feels confidence in their judgements.
on the idea of evaluators: think it's important that we have a distributed ecosystem of indepedent evaluators. the more eyes and people with distributed skill sets the better. it would be a good idea to fund several efforts on this.

I love this. The way I’ve thought about this is - what would you do / spend time on if nobody was watching?
You may be tempted to optimize for something or someone , but really when you think about what you want to do and who you want to surround yourself with, think about what/who you have deep true curiosity about, or what you feel is worthwhile even if it doesn’t work out or if no one else cared about it, or what feels like the truest manifestation of yourself.

Behaviors you tolerate are the values you set
Want to understand an organization’s culture? Look at how it holds people accountable. Processes alone won’t change an organization if the underlying mindset and commitments stay the same. The way a company operates is ultimately an expression of what it truly values. Joe Hart of Dale Carnegie and I discuss why culture runs deeper than any process, framework, or management system. #IncorruptibleBook #Leadership #Accountability #CompanyCulture #OrganizationalCulture

Broadly, feels like the issue is that we’re still at a country vs country dynamic. Q is what is the fastest/lowest risk trigger to unlock a humans vs misaligned model dynamic.
Agree re: catch 22 - on this, are we confident our adversaries aren’t worried about similar issues? I’m assuming no govt wants a frontier model w strong misalignment risk that could destabilize said govt (and this would esp be be true in states that have strong centralized control). And if they are in fact worried (which I'd posit they are), is there possibility to have a narrow collab between US and its adversaries on audit development? Broadly, feels like the issue is that we’re still at a country vs country dynamic. Q is what is the fastest/lowest risk trigger to unlock a humans vs misaligned model dynamic.
