Crosslink is not built around fast finality, and definitely not the subsecond game.
Proof of Work alone cannot offer "hard finality" in sub-second. But a few tricks on top can :). Three rough classes:
- Run BFT protocols amongst the mining pools
- User's produce a guarantee that they can't double spend in some time-bound
- Probabilistic mining pool pre-confs

Imagine a state where you pay taxes but don't get to vote on how it's spent.
That's Zcash today with ZCG.
Every block, coinholders are diluted to fund a committee they can’t elect.
Coinholder funds should be coinholder controlled.

Discussion is good, yet this discussion has been had ad nauseam before you showed up in Zcash.
It seems tiring to you, that is because we are tired of having the discussion over and over when it has been clearly unwanted by the community.
Shielded Labs team / Zooko has lost support from several waves of newcomers in the past and then they just wait for a new crop of newcomers to bait into supporting their broken scheme.
But ok, we will have this discussion again. This time loudly and publicly. And put it to bed finally.
Agree.
1/ Discussion is good. The only way Zcash wins is through discussion. Crosslink could be a terrible idea but calling the very discussion of it an attack or a risk is closed minded and fragile.
FWIW I do think a random tweet about Crosslink from the Zcash handle was provocative and maybe unnecessary but I'm glad for the conversation it's prompting.
Below are why I'm particularly concerned about shutting down security conversations early.
2/ The "encrypted Bitcoin" narrative only works if Zcash can get the hashrate. After my deep dives into PoUW hashrate economics I do not think this will happen. The economics aren't there. Pearl is at least 20x as capital efficient and it's PoW. Yes Pearl is early but try to understand it. It also may be the first of many PoUW chains.
I am not the only person who thinks this BTW. It's just a blind spot for many because PoUW is so new and poorly understood.
3/ If my concerns in 2 materialize then Zcash best move is to lean into an alternative security model from PoW or to find an alternative work based algorithm with better economics for miners.
4/ Both 2 and 3 might be obsolete arguments if there's a fast move toward market share from Zcash. Sometimes the best tech doesn't win because of network effects. But I think that's harder without going directly for small quick transaction use cases with extreme haste. I don't think Zcash is on a path to replace Visa faster than Pearl or other PoUW can decisively outcompete Zcash on security.
Finally, I'm sorry but I'm not here to engage in a deep conversation about this today. The conversations I've seen so far are tiring and impolite.
I'll talk to people about it at Zcon and can answer questions later. Most of the information is already public on my profile.

The market for encrypted cash app is 1,000x more needed in age of AI & flock cameras than bitcoin in 2017
Higher

Nick Bostrom argues humans may be as incapable of imagining AI’s upside as apes are of imagining human life:
"It looks like there's a gradient in the world in terms of AI sentiment, where the US is kind of on the negative extreme of that. People in China, for example, are much more excited about this."
"A large chunk of the potential upside is more of the way of unlocking new ways to be human, new possible modes of being."
"Imagine some great ape ancestors of Homo sapiens deliberating whether they should continue to evolve and one day become human. They would realize some of the benefits, like, 'We could have unlimited bananas.' And that's true."
"But it would miss out on most of what's good about being human. Great literature and art and humor and politics and spirituality."
"It would be presumptuous for us to think that now we have achieved the level of enlightenment where all possible values are transparent to us. Think of a big cathedral of possible modes of being. We have basically explored the janitor's closet."
FULL INTERVIEW: Nick Bostrom says a long pause on AI could cost more lives than it saves. If superintelligence can cure aging, every year of waiting has a death toll. In his words, "we are just dying in the meantime."
Nick Bostrom founded Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute and wrote Superintelligence and Deep Utopia. He joined @theojaffee and @schisofrenia to break down AI consciousness, why a badly done pause could backfire, and why we've only explored the janitor's closet of what minds can be:
01:17 Trump calling AI superintelligence
05:16 the Hugging Face incident and instrumental convergence
08:28 why the AI company is the first target for a misaligned AI
09:31 catching a schemer before it learns to hide
11:06 why AI timing is like surgery for a terminal condition
19:00 why he's wary of pausing AI
25:33 why the US sits at the negative extreme on AI
27:09 apes, bananas, and the janitor's closet
31:13 where he disagrees with Robin Hanson's Age of Em
33:39 whether current models are conscious
37:12 why humans are barely conscious
39:56 open source models and DNA synthesis as the choke point
43:05 what COVID teaches about pauses
46:28 why AI can't do original philosophy yet
49:37 building a superintelligence that's a good cosmic citizen
Congrats to Ulrich, Luke, and Suyash (great cryptographers from StarkWare and Aztec) who are joining Shielded Labs to work on post-quantum research for Zcash!
They're just the latest in a string of high-caliber folks joining Zcash over the past year. LFG!

Replying to @steveonomics
The point of man is to build, create, and improve the lives of others.
The number on the screen is not relevant.
the road to 250k for zcash is unfolding right in front of us, and almost nobody realizes what this actually means.
right now zec is sitting at 1500, less than 2% of btc. but behind the scenes, something historic is happening: btc ogs are quietly building onchain positions in zec via near intents.
it starts as an innocent "hedge" against privacy, quantum, and scaling failure. but what is actually taking place is much bigger. for the first time in history, another coin is officially emerging as a front-line competitor to bitcoin as money and a sovereign store of value.
the signs are everywhere:
1. maxis went from laughing at zec to fearing it look at how btc maxis react today. some random paper proposes a new privacy sidechain for btc, and maxis instantly retweet it like it is the second coming. it is just another sidechain like liquid—vulnerable, custodial risks, easily hacked, and not secured by btc l1. their sudden obsession with hacked-together privacy band-aids proves they know public ledger surveillance is a fatal flaw.
2. the myth of ossification the maxi dogma that money must ossify is completely broken. money cannot stay frozen while the world around it changes. a monetary protocol must evolve to survive quantum computing, ai threats, and global transaction demand. refusing to adapt is not strength; it is surrender.
3. the collapse of maxi arguments every talking point against zcash has evaporated:
"zcash cant scale" -> 50k tps is already on the horizon.
"zcash is a shitcoin" -> it shares the exact same scarcity and distribution ethos.
"zcash isn't private like monero" -> mathematically sound zk-encryption objectively crushes outdated mixing tech.
"zcash has no usage" -> onchain adoption is literally vertical right now.
the reality?
there is zero fundamental argument to hold btc over zec today, other than btc currently having higher liquidity and lower volatility. that is a lagging metric, not an edge.
the adoption curve playing out:
phase 1: open-minded crypto natives (solana crowd rotating in now)
phase 2: btc ogs buying onchain (happening right now)
phase 3: btc maxis quietly hedging in secret so their peer group doesn't excommunicate them
phase 4: institutions rotating capital once etf and product demand wakes up
phase 5: retail and legacy media realizing this is the real upgrade to bitcoin
once the narrative hits the mainstream, justifying bitcoin over zcash will be impossible.
everything is on zcash's side:
- identical hard cap and scarcity
- 10+ years of fair distribution
- quantum readiness vs zero protection
- 50k tps vs 10-minute congested blocks
t- rue mathematical anonymity vs permanent mass surveillance
when bitcoiners are forced to hedge their own coin against its own structural failures, the thesis is already won.
zcash is taking over.

🛡️🛡️🛡️Shielded Zcash transactions are now available in Ledger Wallet desktop 🛡️🛡️🛡️
I personally committed to this one. It took far longer than I expected, but it is now delivered, and that is what matters.
Privacy here is not a server setting. To keep your shielded balance private, the scanning and the transaction building happen on your machine: your unified viewing key is stored locally and is never shared with anyone, including us. That is exactly what made the integration trickier.
When it comes to signing the TX, the ZKP is computed on your machine (it's much faster with Ironwood now 🚀), and then the transaction is signed on your device, on a screen you can trust.
Make sure your Ledger Wallet Desktop and Zcash app are up-to-date, and you're good to interact with Ironwood!
Privacy is normal ✊
Stay safe.
