A little piece on PLATEAU STATE‼️ What we call Plateau State today is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Nigeria. Archaeologists link it to the famous Nok Culture (500BC - 500AD), which produced the oldest terracotta sculptures in West Africa. Evidence of Nok was found in Jema'a, Shendam and parts of the Jos Plateau, proving people have lived there for over 2,000 years. Before colonialism, what we know today as Plateau State did not exist as one political unit. The area was part of the ancient Kwararafa Kingdom, one of the powerful kingdoms linked to the Jukun people. When Kwararafa collapsed around the 18th century, the area became known as Kasashen-Bauchi - a collection of over 40 independent ethnic nations. The major indigenous groups were the Berom, Anaguta, Afizere, Ngas, Goemai, Mwaghavul, Tarok and many others. In the early 19th century during Usman Dan Fodio's Jihad, many non-Muslim groups fled to the hills and rocks of the Jos Plateau for safety because horses could not climb the terrain. That is why Plateau people were never conquered by Sokoto Caliphate. In 1926, the British carved Plateau Province out of Bauchi Province, made up of Jos and Pankshin Divisions. It was because of tin. In 1967, Gowon merged Benue and Plateau Provinces to form Benue-Plateau State. By 1976, under General Murtala Muhammed, Plateau State was carved out as a separate state. It got its name from the beautiful table-like highlands - the Jos Plateau - which has an average height of 1,200 meters. Life was communal and agrarian. They were farmers, hunters, and blacksmiths. They cultivated acha (hungry rice), millet, sorghum and later Irish potatoes. They were also miners - they mined tin and iron from river beds long before Europeans came with modern tools. They lived in clan compounds, worshipped ancestral spirits, and had rich festivals like Berom's Pusdung and Nzem Berom. The first Europeans to show serious interest were agents of the Royal Niger Company looking for tin. In 1902, C.L Temple, the Resident of Bauchi, and mining engineer H.W Laws visited but were repelled by warriors in Shere and Jengre. Later George R. Nicolaus was sent to explore. His tin samples impressed London so much that in 1903 the British invaded with the West African Frontier Force and set up a mining camp in Naraguta, Jos in 1904. That marked the beginning of European settlement in Jos. C: Panshak Derrick Gowok
