In Chaman, residents like 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐢𝐚𝐳 have turned to solar power to secure basic needs like water and running household appliances. However, a major paradox remains: even after investing in solar systems, households are still hit with fixed grid charges and inflated bills. Highlights from PRIED’s Karachi event, where Times of Karachi covered our study launch, “Harnessing Pakistan’s Solar Revolution: A Techno-Economic Assessment of Swarm Electrification.” Discussions with stakeholders highlighted how solarization needs and opportunities vary across Pakistan. While individual rooftop solar systems may be feasible for many households in northern and central regions, Karachi’s high-density urban landscape presents different challenges, including limited rooftop access for apartment residents. These regional differences shape energy access, affordability, and public priorities, underscoring the need for regionally informed energy policies rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Understanding local realities is essential to exploring solutions such as swarm electrification and peer-to-peer electricity sharing. 🎥 Watch the video for perspectives shared at our Karachi event. #Pakistan #SolarEnergy #SwarmElectrification #EnergyTransition #Bijlikahaq

Pakistan’s shift towards solar is already well underway — but how can households make the transition, and what does it mean for the country’s energy future? In her latest piece for Dawn, Zil E Huma explores the growing move towards solar, the choices involved, and what the transition could mean for Pakistan’s energy system. The article draws on insights from Usama Usman of PRIED, who highlights the importance of looking at peak electricity demand when sizing a solar system, rather than relying only on monthly averages. He also shares insights on system choices, net billing and the process of connecting solar to the grid. 🎙️ Listen to Amina Shahab, Researcher at PRIED, and Usama Usman, Researcher at PRIED, speaking to Urdu News about Pakistan’s rapidly evolving solar energy landscape. Pakistan is witnessing a massive rooftop solar PV revolution, driven by the high cost and unreliability of grid electricity. With cumulative solar panel imports crossing 50 GW, the country is rapidly moving toward a more decentralised energy system. But the solar transition raises an important question: How can millions of individual solar systems be interconnected, coordinated, and integrated into a network that was never designed for consumers who also produce electricity? The discussion explores swarm electrification—a decentralised model that connects household solar panels and batteries into local energy-sharing networks. Such systems could allow households with surplus solar power to share electricity with neighbours who cannot afford their own systems, potentially addressing both energy access and equity. PRIED’s research examines the feasibility of this approach in rural Tharparkar, Sindh, and urban Islamabad, assessing its technical, economic, and institutional potential. The findings point toward the need for new frameworks for peer-to-peer electricity trading, stronger prosumer participation, demand-side management, and more inclusive solar policies—while recognising that rural deployment may require targeted transitional support. ▶️ Watch Amina Shahab and Usama Usman discuss what Pakistan’s solar revolution could mean for the future of its electricity system. #solarrevolution #electricity #solarforall #bijlikahaq #energytransition #swarmgrid #Pakistan #pried

As solar transforms Pakistan’s electricity landscape, the country’s energy crisis calls for new solutions. PRIED lead researchers Muqaddas Ashiq and Amina Shahab explore how swarm electrification could turn surplus rooftop solar into a locally shared resource—enabling consumers to buy and sell electricity within their communities. Mainstream media is helping take this conversation beyond the crisis and towards solutions. Muhammad Faizan of NEO News reported on PRIED’s work and brought the conversation on swarm electrification to a wider audience. As solar adoption continues to grow, swarm grids offer a new way to think about how surplus electricity can be shared, connected, and used locally. #SolarEnergy #SwarmElectrification #EnergyTransition #EnergyJustice #Pakistan #RenewableEnergy #SolarPower #Electricity
