This Black History Month, we honour a mother’s lifelong campaign to eradicate racism in Britain. Following the unprovoked, racist murder of her 18-year-old son Stephen in 1993, Baroness Doreen Lawrence OBE launched an extraordinary fight for justice. Her campaign exposed institutional racism in the police, led to the landmark Macpherson Inquiry, and overturned the UK’s 800-year-old double jeopardy law—changing British civil rights forever. Incredible veterinary skill in Texas! When a snake was brought to the South Texas Avian & Exotic Hospital in San Antonio with three golf balls stuck inside its body, veterinary staff had to act fast. Determined to save the reptile without putting it under the knife, the skilled team heavily sedated the snake and began delicate manual manipulation. Step by step, they carefully worked each golf ball back up through its body until all three were successfully retrieved without a single incision. The viral video of the unusual rescue has baffled millions of viewers online, with many speculating the hungry snake mistook the golf balls for a clutch of eggs! Beverley De-Gale MBE & Orin Lewis OBE | Special Recognition Winners (2006) This Black History Month, we honor the extraordinary fight for health equality led by Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis. ✊🏾✨ When Beverley’s son Daniel was diagnosed with leukaemia, he faced staggering odds: because he was Black, his chances of finding a matching stem cell donor were just 1 in 250,000, with only 550 Black donors registered in the entire UK. Refusing to accept that inequality, Beverley and Orin founded the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT). Through relentless nationwide campaigning, they grew the donor pool to tens of thousands, transformed ethnic minority stem cell registration, and saved countless lives. “Every generation has a duty to fight against racism.” Dr. Paul Stephenson OBE | Lifetime Achievement Award (2017) This Black History Month, we honour the incredible legacy of civil rights pioneer Dr. Paul Stephenson OBE. In 1963, Paul led the historic 60-day Bristol Bus Boycott after the local bus company refused to employ Black or Asian drivers. His stand forced the company to overturn its color bar and inspired Britain’s very first Race Relations Act in 1965. His courage changed the course of British law, paving the way for a fairer and more equal nation for generations to come. Heroic neighbours step in to save a child in Poland! When a four-year-old girl managed to climb onto a fifth-floor balcony railing in Łomża, quick-thinking local residents scrambled to avert a disaster. Noticing the young girl dangling nearly naked high above the ground, three brave men grabbed a blanket and positioned themselves directly below her position. Moments later, as the four-year-old fell, the team caught her in the nick of time. Although the force of the drop caused her to bounce onto the ground, a neighbour who is a doctor evaluated her immediately before she was taken to the hospital, where medical staff confirmed she suffered only minor bruises. Police have lauded the neighbours' speedy reaction for saving her life. A routine flight turned into a heart-stopping fight for survival. 👏✨ When a private plane flying from Georgia to Turkey suffered a sudden engine failure over the Black Sea, Belgian pilots Werner Vlasselaer, 55, and Christian Peiffer, 69, faced every aviator’s worst nightmare. Unable to reach the nearby runway, they were forced to make a perilous emergency landing directly into the water, four nautical miles off the coast. As their aircraft began to submerge, Turkish Coast Guard crews launched a rapid response, scrambling vessels and divers to the crash site. Scritching through the waves, rescuers threw lifebuoys to the men bobbing in the water and hauled them aboard to safety, escaping the harrowing ordeal without life-threatening injuries.
