Sir Piers and Lady Silvia Le Marchant visited the library last week. Sir Piers is a direct descendant of Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant, the Guernseyman who founded the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, and who died in 1812 at the Battle of Salamanca #guernsey

Sir Piers is a direct descendant of Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant, the Guernseyman who founded the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, and who died in 1812 at the Battle of Salamanca. It was Sir Piers' and Lady Silvia's first visit to Guernsey, and they were delighted to come into the Library, where they learnt more about the close family connection between their ancestor and wealthy shipowner Pierre Mourant, the former owner of Candie House. John Gaspard Le Marchant was Mourant's brother-in-law, and he and his family used to spend holidays here. We were also able to show them a collection of letters written by their ancestor! #guernsey #sandhurst #localhistory #localhistorymatters #Library

Look what Miffy from @CandieMuseum brought into the Library today for the little ones, along with lots of other Victorian toys from their collection! This is a praxinoscope, the successor to the zoetrope. It was invented in France in 1877 #christmaspresents #guernsey
