Loma Prieta: Thirty-seven years ago today, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake severely shook the San Francisco and Monterey Bay regions at 5:04 p.m., for 20 seconds. Often referred to as the “World Series Earthquake” due to its occurrence during the 1989 World Series game between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics, its epicenter was located on the San Andreas Fault, near the Loma Prieta peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The shaking from the Loma Prieta earthquake was felt as far away as San Diego and western parts of Nevada, according to the California Geological Survey (CGS). It claimed 63 lives and caused widespread damage to property and critical infrastructure, including the partial collapse of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
