Flat grave markers were popularized in the early 20th C, providing a less costly memorial option. However, flat markers are particularly susceptible to sinking. Join us @crownhillcemetery Sept 3 to learn to locate lost stones! fb.me/e/2XPjMTGGg #treasurehunt #historicindy

Irvington was named after Washington Irving, who wrote "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Irvington was also the birthplace & namesake of the Irvington Group, an early 20th century art movement whose artists included William Forsyth & Clifton Wheeler. artnet.com/artists/william-f…
Like @Woodruff_Place, Irvington was also a suburb of Indianapolis. It was founded in 1870 by abolitionist lawyers Jacob Julian and Sylvester Johnson and included winding roads of dirt and brick that reflected landscape design in the Romantic era.
Woodruff Place was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Today, it's known for its annual neighborhood-wide flea market. (And for all its original fountains and statues, of course.)
By the 1920s, @Woodruff_Place was surrounded by other homes & neighborhoods. The town successfully resisted annexation until 1962, though, fighting the city to the Indiana Supreme Court and appealing that court’s decision to the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused to hear the case.
Woodruff Place was incorporated as a town in 1876. Since it didn't have police or fire protection, @Woodruff_Place contracted with Indianapolis to provide those services. The area boomed in the 1890s, but experienced a decline when wealthy families moved to the suburbs after WWI.
