今年4月13日、トランプ米大統領は、ドアダッシュを通じてマクドナルドの商品をホワイトハウスに届けてもらった。配達員に100ドルのチップを渡す姿も、写真や映像とともに報じられた。チップ収入に対する所得税の負担軽減策をアピールするための演出だった。
同氏はマクドナルド好きで知られる。だが、今回このブランドを選んだ理由は、単なる好みだけではなかったかもしれない。手頃な価格で親しまれてきたブランドを通じて、「庶民の味方」を印象づける狙いもあったのではないか。
ところが、米マクドナルドの株価は9月23日、約4年ぶりの安値をつけた。牛肉価格や人件費の上昇で、看板商品の「ビッグマック」などはかつての割安感を失いつつあり、低所得層を中心に客足が鈍っている。店舗改装やAI関連の投資負担に対する懸念も、株価の重荷となっている。
価格設定へのAI活用も議論を呼んでいる。同社は、AIは店舗ごとの価格を提案する補助ツールであり、最終的な決定権は加盟店にあると説明する。店舗間の価格差は確認されているが、その原因をAIだと断定することはできない。
米国が関与する中東での戦闘に伴うエネルギー高は、企業にも家計にも負担を強いている。一方、トランプ氏が推進するAI向けデータセンターの拡大には、支持層の一部からも反発が出ている。
「庶民の味方」という演出と、物価高に苦しむ家計の現実。その隔たりに、トランプ氏はどう応えるのだろうか。

Overpromising to win contracts. Hiding failures. Cheating to jump the queue for a gym class. AI, or “SI” if you speak Trumpian, is looking less artificial and all too human.
We expect education to give us both skills and a moral compass. AI training faces a similar challenge. Yet flawed teachers can produce decent people, and good teachers can produce the opposite. Some people do wrong because they don’t know better. Others know better and do it anyway.
Perhaps human imperfection has been part of the problem all along. If we want AI that is intellectually capable and morally sound, slowing the race for more powerful systems while we become better people and better trainers may not be such a crazy idea.
