What connects Clifden, County Galway, with the story of India’s Viceroy? 🇮🇪🇮🇳 The answer lies in the remarkable Mayo family legacy — a story of Ireland, India, history and family that continues across generations. The Chairman of the Ireland India Council, Prashant Shukla, was delighted to attend a special gathering in Clifden hosted by Charles Diarmuidh John Bourke, 11th Earl of Mayo, the present holder of the Mayo title and a later-generation descendant of Richard Southwell Bourke, 6th Earl of Mayo. The 11th Earl shared deeply personal reflections on his distinguished ancestor, the 4th Viceroy and Governor-General of India (1869–1872), including insights from his recent visit to India and his family’s enduring connection with the country. Before becoming Viceroy, Richard Southwell Bourke served three times as Chief Secretary for Ireland. His time in India was associated with important developments in administration, education and public works, including the 1872 Census of India and Mayo College in Ajmer. His service ended tragically when he was violently assassinated at Port Blair in 1872. His death was a profound loss to his family and community, and a significant loss for both Ireland and India. The gathering highlighted how this remarkable historical connection continues to resonate more than 150 years later. The Chairman of the Ireland India Council was delighted to speak following the 11th Earl, reflecting on the enduring Ireland–India relationship. History creates connections. Memory keeps them alive. Friendship gives them a future. Our sincere thanks to Charles Bourke, 11th Earl of Mayo, for his invitation, warm hospitality and for sharing this extraordinary Ireland–India story. 🇮🇪🤝🇮🇳 #IrelandIndiaCouncil #IrelandIndia #11thEarlOfMayo #Clifden #IndiaIreland #Heritage #History #Friendship
