Some other things that I want to mention that the history books tend to not mention…
- I made the tier list once
- I advocated for the acknowledgment of low tiers in early theoretical models of how combat in SSBM works
- I contributed to that body of work (Cactuar’s project)
Player: KirbyKaze
Mains: Sheik
Region: Ontario, Canada
Years active: 2009-2018, 2023
Peak Global Rank: 6th, 2012
Best Wins: Mango, PPMD, Hungrybox
Summary:
KirbyKaze was one of the first god slayers. Being 6th in the world at the hight of the era means you are the ultimate gate keeper. The line in the sand you must cross to become a legend. Even he would slay gods. Most impressively being in the rarified air of defeating TWO gods in one bracket at ROM3. Kaze is a myth among players today and defined early Canadian Smash. Inventor of the Dynasty Combo

A particularly entertaining flaw in the Super Smash Bros. Melee programming is Bowser Floor Blindness, where Bowser regularly forgets that his Fire Breath affects the floor in front of him.

After this set, RapMonster went on to get 2nd place at a major. I just need to take a moment to stress how unfathomably incredible that is.
RapM just became the highest placing Luigi player of all time, and he's a young student who was literally doing homework at the venue while the event was happening. This record was set by Plup nearly a full decade ago (5th) and was just shattered in a game that's over 24 years old. He is younger than the game itself by a handful of years.
Within the past few weeks, he has already done the impossible multiple times. He was able to take a set off of the current best Falcon player in the world (Wizzrobe), a matchup many thought was an auto-loss for him, and not only did he just make top 8 at a major for the first time, he was only 1 spot away from winning the whole thing.
In a game where many people thought the future of this game would be nothing but perfectly played Fox dittos where sets are determined by port priority, it is instead being taken over by a bunch of kids playing characters like Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Luigi. This Luigi player in particular looks like he has what it takes to go all the way. You never know what the future will hold.

In light of today's tournament, I compiled a list of players that have won melee majors/big invitationals without using a top tier (top 7) character:
ChuDat (ICs - Pound 2)
Axe (Pikachu - Summit 8)
aMSa (Yoshi - TBH10, Apex '22, Scuffed WT)
That's it. 3 players over 24+ years.

Compiled some data. Here is every cody instant aerial against n0ne at every major they've played in their entire careers.
The data suggests both playstyle changes as well as a increased ability to hit frame 1 and 2 aerials.
n0ne won every set pre zjump, Cody won every set after
