Today in 1882, violence erupted in the remote valley of Maamtrasna on the Galway–Mayo border. In a rough stone cabin, five members of the Joyce family were slaughtered in a manner so brutal that news of it travelled far beyond the mountains. The victims were an 80 year old granny, a father and mother and their teenage son and daughter. Only a young boy survived long enough to give an account before dying of his wounds.
The killings shocked Ireland, but they also sent ripples across the British Empire. In London, The Spectator newspaper declared that the murders revealed the existence in Ireland of peasants [quote] “who are scarcely civilised beings, far nearer to savages than any other white men… in knowledge, in habits, and in the discipline of life no higher than Maories or other Polynesians.”
Eight men from this Gaeltacht in Connacht were arrested. None spoke English with fluency, yet their trial was conducted entirely in that tongue. Three were condemned to hang. Five others saved their lives by pleading guilty. One of those sentenced to death was Maolra Seoighe, known to the authorities as Myles Joyce, a 40-year-old farmer. Illiterate and unable to understand the language of the court, he stood bewildered as his fate was decided.
“Níl mé ciontach” (I'm not guilty) he cried out after sentence was passed. Even on the eve of execution, his two fellow prisoners admitted their own guilt but swore that Myles Joyce had no part in the murders. Yet the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, the Earl Spencer, didnt care. So, on the 15th of December 1882, Myles Joyce was hanged outside Galway Jail, protesting his innocence to the last.
This travesty of justice resonated with an unlikely namesake of the victim. Writer James Joyce even championed the cause in an essay originally written in Italian "Ireland at the Bar" (L'Irlanda alla sbarra, 1907) “The figure of this bewildered old man, left over from a culture which is not ours, a deaf-mute before his judge, is a symbol of the Irish nation at the bar of public opinion.” He cites the injustice again in Finnegans Wake.
The Maamtrasna murders and Maolra Seoighe/Myles Joyce execution remained a stain on the record of British justice in Ireland, emblematic of a system that disregarded the language, culture, and dignity of the people it governed. In 2018, President Michael D. Higgins issued a posthumous pardon for Myles Joyce, acknowledging his execution as a “shameful episode in Ireland and Britain’s history.”

Let's keep this issue trending for the next 8 days!
At 19 years old, standard dreams usually mean getting a driver’s license, traveling with friends, or starting a career.
For Isabella Travers, from Arklow, it also means fighting every single day to keep hold of her independence.
"It is not about reversing what has already happened, but about protecting the future and giving people living with FA the opportunity to hold on to the parts of our lives that matter most to us."
Isabella hasn't let FA define her. She works from home for her father’s business, loves crocheting, dreams of driving, and cherishes every moment with her friends and family. But FA is a progressive thief: without treatment, fine motor skills, speech, swallowing, and vision remain under constant threat.
There is a drug—Skyclarys—that can slow this progression. Patients in Ireland have waited over 700 days, caught behind HSE bureaucracy and price negotiations. Every single day of delay means another piece of someone's independence is lost forever.
Isabella isn't asking for a miracle; she is asking for time.
Ahead of the final HSE leadership decision on August 25, Isabella, her family, and supporters are taking the fight to Dublin. They need us behind them.
✊ STAND WITH ISABELLA:
March in Dublin: Join the protest on Sunday, August 23rd at the Garden of Remembrance.
Demand Action: Write to your local TDs, the Minister for Health, and the Taoiseach urged by time, not red tape.
Share Her Story: Help us amplify her voice so the decision-makers see the person, not just the cost line.
Time is running out. Let’s make sure they hear her. 💙

Tonight’s soup run began long before we arrived at the GPO, with a lot of preparation and organising throughout the day.
Over the past few weeks, we have become increasingly concerned by the number of elderly people and people with physical disabilities coming to our soup run — some using Zimmer frames, walking aids or crutches. Watching someone struggle to stand in a queue for such a long time when they are already experiencing mobility difficulties is heartbreaking.
Because of this, we have introduced a priority system at our GPO soup run.
From now on, those with visible mobility difficulties or physical disabilities, including elderly people using walking aids, people using Zimmer frames and those on crutches, will be assisted first. We will then prioritise families with children and people sleeping rough before continuing with the general queue.
This isn't about giving anyone special treatment. It is about dignity, compassion and recognising when someone simply cannot physically manage a long wait.
Tonight, the number of people attending who had mobility difficulties was particularly noticeable. It is difficult enough navigating daily life on crutches or with a Zimmer frame without having to stand waiting for food.
Despite everything, tonight we served just under 350 hot, nutritious meals to people who needed them.
A huge thank you to every volunteer who helped everything run smoothly and to every single person who cooks, prepares, donates and supports our work. We simply could not continue this service without you.
Another Friday at the GPO. Another reminder of why compassion and dignity must always come first. ❤️
Have a safe and peaceful weekend from all of us at Muslim Sisters of Éire (MSOE).

It’s been a heavy day💜.
We started this morning by making our position clear: Muslim Sisters of Éire has zero tolerance for racism, Islamophobia or discrimination. Comments of this nature will be removed, and those responsible will be banned from our platforms.
And then this evening, we did what we have done week after week for 11 years — we showed up.
Tonight, 420 hot, nutritious meals were served from six six-foot tables filled with food for our pals who were waiting for us.
There is something deeply ironic about starting your day having to defend yourself against racial discrimination, and ending it standing on the streets serving people from every background, nationality, faith and walk of life.
But we keep marching on — because our hearts are with the people we serve.
For over a decade, we have stood shoulder to shoulder with them. We have listened to their stories and wiped their tears. We have found clothes for people who had nothing and put shoes on the feet of people who came to us barefoot. We have advocated for people, helped some find homes, and, most importantly, reminded them that somebody cares.
Our soup run has no ID.
No nationality.
No religion.
No race.
Our arms are open to everyone. We believe in dignity, compassion and respect for every human being.
And no amount of hate will change that.
If you would like to support our Friday Soup Run, we urgently welcome donations of sleeping bags, hygiene products, ambient/non-perishable food, chocolates, crisps, bananas, apples and oranges.
You can also sponsor a hot meal for just €3.50 through our website.

Thank you to everyone who continues to stand beside us, donate, volunteer and believe in what we do.
Hate will never stop us from helping. 💜

Thousands of Orthodox Jews packed the streets at night.
No Israeli flags. No Zionist slogans.
Their message was clear and public:
“We oppose and have no part in Zionism and the State of Israel.”
This is not a handful of activists. This is an entire community saying it out loud.
The video does not lie.
