I was honored to accept President Trump's invitation to serve on the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.
This agency, formed by act of Congress over thirty years ago, is designed to advise both the President and Congress on matters pertaining to the defense and enhancement of religious liberty around the world. The Commission, by intention, is strictly bi-partisan, its members chosen by leaders of both major political parties.
Distinguished Catholics who have served on this body over the years include Professor Robert George, Ambassador Mary Ann Glendon, Fr. Thomas Reese, S.J., Archbishop Charles Chaput, and Bishop William Murphy. I feel privileged to join their company.

Budayawan dan Seniman Indonesia, Butet Kartaredjasa (@masbutet) serahkan 14 lukisan kaca Jalan Salib versi Jawa kepada Paus Leo XIV pada audiensi umum, (17/6), di Vatikan.
Menurut Butet, dalam tradisi masyarakat Jawa ada kekuatan dari Punakawan: Bagong, Petruk, Gareng, dan Semar yang sangat bersahabat dengan masyarakat untuk menyampaikan pesan kebaikan.
Setelah menyerahkan lukisan, Butet juga berkesempatan untuk mencium tangan Paus. Baciamano al Papa atau mencium tangan Paus merupakan tradisi Katolik sebagai isyarat penghormatan yang mendalam di mana pengikut setia berlutut atau membungkuk untuk mencium cincin kepausan yang dikenakan oleh Paus.

Budayawan Butet Kartaredjasa menyerahkan lukisan Jalan Salib kepada Paus Leo XIV di kompleks Basilika Santo Petrus, Vatikan, Rabu (17/6/2026).
Karya yang dipersiapkan sekitar enam bulan itu menghadirkan kisah Jalan Salib melalui tokoh-tokoh Punakawan khas budaya Jawa.
"Saya menafsir satu peristiwa ikonik tentang perjuangan kemanusiaan, peristiwa Jalan Salib itu. Saya memvisualkan dengan menggunakan idiom tradisional Jawa yang memakai tokoh-tokoh Punakawan sebagai pewarta pesan-pesan filsafat," ujar Butet kepada Kompas.com, Kamis (18/6/2026).
Menurut Butet, Paus Leo XIV menyambut baik karya tersebut.
"Dia sangat senang. Dia tidak pernah melihat ada pemikiran seperti itu. Ada orang dari belahan negara lain bisa melakukan tafsir seperti itu," kata Butet.
Ia juga menegaskan bahwa pesan yang dibawa dalam lukisannya tidak hanya ditujukan untuk umat Katolik, tetapi dapat dimaknai lintas iman.

Three cheers for Pope Leo's comments regarding the Christian foundations of Europe and the defense of the unborn. Echoing the sentiments of Pope Benedict XVI, Leo reminded his audience that the essential structures of European society and Europe's commitment to human rights are unthinkable apart from Christianity. And speaking before a hard-left Spanish Parliament, the Pope presented an admirably consistent ethic of life, defending migrants, to be sure, but also insisting that no society which "casts into the shadows" the unborn can be called truly just. With bracing clarity, he insisted, "Every human life must be recognized and safeguarded from conception to its natural end, in every circumstance of its existence." And he concluded that "the moral greatness of a nation" is manifested in this principle. That he has been received so warmly in Spain I take to be an encouraging sign that the people of that country, especially the youth, have finally had it with a soul-flattening secularist ideology.

I am grateful to Pope Leo for saying this. While the media narrative constantly gins up conflict–and yes, real disagreements have happened and will happen–the reality is often much more complicated.
Pope Leo preaches the gospel, as he should, and that will inevitably mean he offers his opinions on the moral issues of the day. The President–and the entire administration–work to apply those moral principles in a messy world.
He will be in our prayers, and I hope that we'll be in his.
