Kefalotyri cheese made from raw goats milk. Cut into it this morning after six months of ageing. I got the salting perfect and it's a little creamy and tangy. Couldn't be happier. The real challenge now is to replicate it. – at Heidelberg, South Africa

Recent read. One of those books that linger in your mind long after you finish it.

Two excellent novels I've read recently. Both highly recommended.

As a bit of a backyard hobby farmer, I've always dreamt of buying a piece of land to live on. Sadly, as much as I realise crime is rife everywhere, I still feel safer in suburbia and wouldn't want to subject my family to a potential farm attack.
When four masked men attacked Gideon Roos and his family at their Winelands home, he witnessed their military precision. Some experts have said the same. #CarteBlanche

Vintage publishef this book in 1990. As dad liked to say; it's terrific and terrifying. A classic. How to read the many pasts and presences of contemporary South Africa. A timeless meditation on a beautiful land, its people and its delightful pronouns. Salutes!

The Super Bowl halftime show has left me with more questions than answers. Like, what does a trip to Puerto Rico cost? Are their cigars really that good? And most importantly, could I pull off wearing a fedora?

X has become a stream where a bunch of people continually ask AI stupid questions to validate their own point of view or discredit people with differing views. Don't complain when AI makes us stupid.

First ever fig. Bird ate half before I got to it. I ate the other half. Was nice and sweet but would have been sweeter in a few days if the bird didn't get to it.

Darrel is a masterful storyteller. Highly recommend reading some of his blog posts.
I'm delivering my latest newsletter - a letter from Tangier - tomorrow morning. If that's something you might like and haven't yet subscribed, the link is on my website (link in bio), free. One thing I can't be accused of is spamming folk with too many mails. Happy new year!

Sunday braai and a nice, gifted bottle of red wine. I'm not much of a wine drinker; I'm more the taverna table wine type of drinker.
