📝 Poetry can offer a way to put difficult experiences into words.
Mandem, Let’s Talk is a free South-East London workshop run by black-led charity Poetic Unity where men use spoken word to discuss mental health, identity, masculinity and the social pressures they face.
Research by the Priory Group found that 77% of men surveyed had experienced symptoms of anxiety, stress or depression, while 40% said they had never spoken to anyone about their mental health.
Three black creatives share how they use poetry to confront personal challenges, challenge harmful stereotypes and explain why writing gives them space to be heard.

This year's #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek is all about #community & we couldn't think of a better theme for it. We're proud to support community organisations like @Poetic_Unity, creating safe spaces to belong.
ALT 'Poetic Unity provides a safe place for me to express how I truly feel, it's a refuge because it normalises the issues that young people like myself go through with mental health and creates spaces where I can connect with others that have similar experiences to me. This is so important as it shows me I'm not alone and that there's people like Poetic Unity who genuinely care about us. Leah (aged 22). Participant, Poetic Unity.' Last week, @Poetic_Unity delivered an incredible workshop for our Writers Programme, guiding our young writers to explore their mental health and express themselves through poetry.
By the end of the session, they had created some truly powerful pieces. It was amazing to watch them open up, connect, and build their confidence. A huge thank you to our friends at @Poetic_Unity for such a meaningful session💡
