The war with Iran has yet to yield a diplomatic breakthrough — and continues to roil global oil markets. Gregory Brew (@gbrew24), a historian of oil and the Middle East, joins host Jonathan Guyer (@mideastXmidwest) to discuss the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. Greg breaks down the geopolitics of oil and places the conflict in historical context.

I told @fox5dc that 45% of Americans say the war on Iran has made us less safe, nearly twice the 23% who say it has made us safer, per our new IGA/@YouGov survey.

The World Cup is heating up as teams head into the quarter finals. It has been controversial: immigration crackdowns, pricey tickets, and a cozy relationship between FIFA and Trump. This week, host Jonathan Guyer (@mideastXmidwest) is joined by Alex Shephard (@alex_shephard), senior editor at The New Republic (@newrepublic) and co-founder of Golden Goal to discuss.

"The story of this World Cup is that the tournament is still bigger than the president, and it's still bigger than Infantino," @alex_shephard tells me on @PodcastNOTA. "The tournament was surprisingly resilient to the Trump effect. Even though there was all this cloud of immigration issues, of ICE being at stadiums for security, of mistreating teams from certain countries or subjecting them to extra security, the World Cup itself has been, I think for the most part, a kind of celebration of multiculturalism, of diversity, of a country that is a diaspora — most people in the United States came here from somewhere else. And I think that this World Cup reflects that too." "It will find ways to resist attempts to politicize and exploit it, as it always does."

How do we write about the Un-American Century? "For so long, the world has basically reflected America back to them," @mmschwartz tells me on @podcastNOTA. “Anywhere you go, people will speak English. The world economy depends on the dollar. American power really organizes much of the world's politics. So there hasn't really been much of an incentive, one could say, for someone who didn't want to really get a sense of what was happening outside of our country. And now that's just not gonna cut it. "What we're trying to do with @thedialmag is present international writing and reporting in a way that people will actually read. "One of the frustrations that I have reading about foreign policy, in general, is that international news is presented to American readers in this kind of eat-your-vegetables way that's really dry and that's often not really very accurate to me. "I absolutely bristle at reading any kind of policy paper where you just read what Russia thinks and what France thinks, and well, actually, these are countries with millions of people. Obviously, not everyone thinks the same way. And how on earth are we supposed to understand what's happening elsewhere if we're not looking at it on the very personal, human level? "We live in a time when so much of the media and the way that we write about other parts of the world is... changing for the better, which is to say, it used to be that the way that we experienced the rest of the world as Americans was that an American person would go somewhere and maybe learn a few words of that language and come back with something reported mainly through unnamed fixers, that may or may not have been accurate. "Whereas now, it's never been easier to really know what people outside of the US are thinking and to bring their voices to the page, to publish essays and reporting such as what we do. And that can only make our understanding of the world better and stronger."
