SERIOUS QUESTION to all food boffins: Why is Salt and PEPPER the standard table accoutrement? Why pepper?? Salt, I understand and although I love it, why is pepper used and not another spice? There are a ton of other ones which can be used. Is it a leftover from colonial days?
