Chrystia Freeland didn’t need a handler. US cable booked her precisely because she delivers the sermon they want: Trump is the disease, American voters are the relapse, and “Team Democracy” is on life support because they elected him twice. She sat on an American set, declared their country the place where democracy is dying, mocked “capitulating” CEOs and university presidents, and offered Minneapolis free beer in Canada. The arrogance. A politician her own party just rejected still talks as if she is the adult in the room and 77 million American voters are children who failed a grade school civics test She is no longer finance minister, deputy PM, or even an MP. Lecturing Americans does nothing for Canadian workers facing tariffs, housing costs, or the deficits she helped run. Who does this serve—Canada, or Freeland’s residual media brand? Imagine a hated Republican flying to Toronto to tell Canadians their democracy is rotting after a decade of Liberal rule, Emergencies Act overreach, the massive influx of immigrants, a housing crisis and collapsing affordability. The same crowd cheering Freeland would call it colonial arrogance. Why is the reverse treated as courage? She even admitted Trump was right about the China shock—then pivoted to scolding Americans for voting the “wrong” way. If the diagnosis is real, why is the prescription a moral lecture from someone Canadians already discarded? How does this help Carney negotiate? How does it lower a single tariff? It doesn’t.
