Pensions and Inheritance Tax: changes are coming from April 2027 From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and lump sum death benefits are set to be brought within the scope of Inheritance Tax, changing the role pensions can play in estate planning. For those affected, this could mean reviewing pension nominations, wills and wider estate plans, as well as considering how assets are passed on to family and other beneficiaries and the potential Inheritance Tax exposure across your pension and wider estate. Existing plans that were structured around pensions sitting outside the estate may therefore need to be reconsidered ahead of the new rules.
