NEW: A few years ago, Scott Gottlieb was helping the Biden administration censor conservatives on Twitter for Pfizer. Last year, he was saying that Robert F. Kennedy was unqualified and lambasted plans for higher vaccine standards. This year, he's back in the inner circle at FDA. Gottlieb endorsed Overton and his two top aides at FDA spoke with Overton before her confirmation hearing. Kennedy's leadership was once seen as a direct rebuke of the censorship and Big Pharma capture that defined the COVID era. A lot has changed.

Nice little historical reminder from @VPrasadMDMPH that, good as genome sequencing is, the promise of "customized medicines for everyone" has not really come out at all. drvinayprasad.com/p/genomics…

Trust and Science The scientific method is the best tool we have for arriving at truth. It is not much good for building trust — just look at the news. Is there a way to “science” our way to closing the trust gap? #STATSummit

STAT has turned defending the biomedical status quo into a business model. It convenes conferences to trot out the same failed establishment figures, packages their talking points as news, and publishes hit pieces against people trying to change the system. Now it brings back Califf to disparage DOGE. Apparently talking straight means giving establishment hacks another microphone to explain why disturbing their preferred arrangements is a national catastrophe. I’d be more interested in hearing these people account for their own failed leadership.
The fmr FDA commissioners are ready to, as I like to say, sit crooked and talk straight. Right away, Rob Califf says that he thinks DOGE will go down as “one of the biggest disasters in American history.” #STATSummit

How did Fauci become the best paid bureaucrat in history? His diary shows he was an expert swamp creature. When he was fighting with CDC Director Rochelle Walensky: - He fed a hit piece about her to the New York Times, then consoled her about that very same New York Times hit piece! - He recommended a top to bottom review of CDC - He went over her head at HHS (Sean Mccluskie) and the White House (Courtney Rowe) for greater control
In his diary, Anthony Fauci called the CDC “truly a dysfunctional organization.” He kept that criticism out of his book, even though he had recommended Rochelle Walensky as CDC director. But he made sure to note it in his diary.

This is why Science does not deserve the enormous amount of federal funding it receives. Rather than focusing on science, its editors promote fluffy, woke commentary about personal identity and social agendas. A scientific journal’s role is to advance science, not lend scientific prestige to the editors’ preferred social causes.
"I did not need to disguise the constraints of my career to prove I was a devoted mother, just as I do not need to disguise the demands of motherhood to prove I am a serious scientist." #ScienceWorkingLife scim.ag/4xUARcY

I don’t understand the point of pre registering and getting IRB approval only to then make it a single arm uncontrolled study. There was so much potential here but once again we prioritize speed to market over rigorous outcomes
Today @TheLancet published our AMIE study with @BIDMC_Medicine, the first prospective study of patient-facing conversational diagnostics in a real clinic. AMIE is a research system people can chat with before doctors appointments. Testing AMIE outside the lab with real urgent care patients showed how technology can help gather medical histories safely. Clinicians reported that the summaries helped them prepare for visits in 75% of cases and influenced their approach to care in more than half. AMIE’s differential diagnoses also matched the doctors’ final diagnoses 90% of the time giving clinicians more time to focus on patient care. It’s Google’s first-ever paper in The Lancet’s main journal!

I know both and I know both care about evidence. it is also refreshing to even see a conversation about evidence without political theater of left vs right. every sensible person should appreciate how low the risks are. current covid hospitalizations are probably an overestimate since covid->pneumonia/hypoxia->hospitalization is a zebra now. so covid hospitalizations are a mix of incidental or mild and unrelated versus the now most common causal path of covid>URI>volume depletion/fatigue> fall or syncope. so if you can mitigate that, that could be helpful I also don't believe that VA group or their prior work. Have they been right about anything? wrong on long covid, wrong on repeat infections, wrong on glps helping every outcome (cognitive, psychiatric). so I don't have faith in this one as our main evidence we just ultimately have no idea and people have to make decisions nonetheless. i think the risks are going to be tiny/rare on either side. I personally wouldn't recommend it in 1st, 2nd, or third trimester. good read nonetheless

NIH stagnation becomes biology’s stagnation. This is largely true because NIH sets the course that nonprofits and industry follow. It continues to fund university expansion, bureaucratic centers and programs, and narrow research directions controlled by the same people for decades, while neglecting many of the most important questions in biology, including how environmental influences affect organisms. AI and lab automation will not solve this bureaucratic stall or the problem of asking the wrong questions and leaving important ones unasked.
As bio PhD, it's amazing how sleepy & slow biology now feels Last peak moment was maybe CRISPR in 2012? Seems like that should change over time w AI & some closed loop automation But maybe could have changed earlier w microgrants, changes in regulation & structure (?)

MAHA could be as powerful as the NRA: A hub for the grassroots, bestower of valued endorsements, tracker of betrayals and promises kept. 90% of both parties do not like Big Pharma, according a poll MAHA never released in full. That potential is being squandered in favor of invite-only rooftop parties.
